Mesmerizing beauty...Just acquired a Sultani / Altin from the riegn of Suleyman the Magnificent, (1520-1566) minted in 1520 in the first year of his reign. One of the greatest Ottoman rulers oversaw a golden age of art, calligraphic and architectural advancement. A virtuous poet and keen goldsmith it's no wonder that his empire stretched from the gates of Vienna to the Persian border. His wife known as Rozelana was a christian convert to islam from the Rus people of Eastern Europe and also wielded considerable power. He also had a darker side executing some of his sons when they rebelled against him. Though supporters would argue that this was done with respect to the law of the state. He is often called Sulÿman Qanouni or th law giver by Arabic speakers. He is often remembered for waring an incredably large turban which was in fact his burial shroud wrapped around his head. A reminder that although he was the most powerful man in Europe and the Middle East he was beholden unto God and would one day die. Suleyman was also a major european player being alined with the French for many years and often took part in the negotiations of European treaties and alliances. He commissioned many incredible buildings by Sinan the genius architect including the blue mosque as well as the upgrading of the Riwaqs or pillars around the Kaaba in Mecca which survived mostly intact until the 20th and very early 21st centuries. Today only a fraction remains. His reputation was known throughout the world and despite his large military campaigns, (he even sent a fleet to help an Indonesian sultan fight Portuguese raiders), he was a reformer of law and economics in the empire. It was also during his reign that the fabled Peri Ries map was created showing Europe and the American with incredable accuracey and detail. This coin is a poignant reminder of the achievements of art and calligraphic design of one of the most momentous rulers of the 16th century. #gold #sultani #suleyman #ottoman #islam #islamichistory #money #coin #turkey #egypt #1520 #samifortune #fortunecollection #thefortunecollection #art #caligraphy
