#TheGentCommandments "Thou Shalt Fasten The Bottom Button Of His Waistcoat" #TGC The Image & Fashion Guide. Earlier, we posted about the correct length and size of a waistcoat. Now, let's talk about fastening your buttons. Some have taken it as a fashion statement by wearing a Waistcoat (or vest as it is called in the USA and elsewhere) with the bottom button left undone. Though, we do not prescribe how you should wear your waistcoat, you'd appreciate this sartorial guidance if you want to look the part - I mean really really look THE PART. Especially when it comes to the double breasted waistcoat, it's best when it's worn as a formal piece. Traditionally, the bottom button was left undone to create a little bit of comfort for the wearer if and when he was engaged in a physical activity, such as moving up and down, a Master of Ceremony sitting and standing up often or someone loading or unloading, so as to preserve the "crisp and sharp" state of the waistcoat. We all don't like a wrinkled attire. Additionally, a sartorial secret is that, if you had a belly full after eating for example, unfastening the bottom button could create a little more space. There's a precedent: (I couldn't confirm the veracity of this story) but apparently this was the case with future king Edward VII, then Prince of Wales, had gained so much weight that he couldn't fasten his bottom button. To make him feel comfortable, members of the court followed suit. There other theories that couldn't hold water, so I'd waste no time discussing them. Today, understandably, as fashion evolves, the undone bottom button has "become a thing". However, to those who traditional dressing/grooming étiquettes still is kind of a big deal, keep that button fastened. This is no different than starting a conversation about the length of your trousers, jacket, when to fasten your jacket button or just the top, middle, down or all buttons. So you get the point.
