April 2015 / New York City

After a long winter in New York, I stepped outside today to a seemingly brighter sun and warmer breeze, signals that spring is finally making its arrival. Around this time of year, a sense of possibility permeates the air, reminding me of when I was a child, fearless and free. I’m neither anymore. Are any of us? As we grow older, we trade in courage for worry. We accumulate responsibilities that we can’t shirk in favor of careless days - or nights - of fun. We settle into routine and begin to wonder: Has my window of opportunity passed? We’re told not to dream, and well-meaning pragmatists advise us, “That is impossible. Leave it for the young up-and-comers.” Yet some of us dare to believe.

When we reach out to grasp what is possible, we must let go of what is. Like the turning of seasons, we must change in order to grow. Ask yourself: What have I been dreaming about? And then, in the words of photographer Megan McIsaac, “Let go of your thoughts and all of your fears. Stop grasping at water, and trust your intuition. Anything is possible.” Go. Try. Fail. Try again. And again. Keep reaching and you’ll discover that you’re capable of more than you thought was possible.
