Great Sphinx of Giza

In 1580, Richard Hakluyt, an English writer, visited the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx. Upon reflection of this visit, he wrote, “Neare to these piramides appeareth out of the sand a great head of stone somewhat like marble, which is discovered so farre as the necke joyneth with the shoulders, being all whole, saving that it wanteth a little tippe of the nose.”

Hakluyt’s observations support that the nose was damaged 218 years before Napoleon came to Egypt. Furthermore, drawings by Frederic Louis Norden depict the missing nose in 1757, 41 years before Napoleon had entered Egypt. Yet, Napoleon and his men are frequently blamed for destroying the nose during target practice. It is unlikely, however, that Napoleon would’ve participated in or allowed such behavior. Napoleon's purpose in invading Egypt, in addition to overthrowing the Mamelukes and establishing a French protectorate, was to unearth and catalog the remains of Egypt's ancient civilization. He had his scholars carefully examine the Great Sphinx and record its measurements and their observations.

Was the nose damaged by anthropogenic activity, or has it worn away by natural causes, like water erosion or wind and sand damage? Like its true age, we may never know; but Napoleon Bonaparte is not likely the culprit.
