I`m really scared of those hands, which can appear from everywhere. It was a tough experience, to watch the trailer, because that sound of Kayako... Brrrr!
お化け女
The Grudge (2020)
Although 2004’s The Grudge was slicker and better acted than the film which inspired it, its americanization was distracting and in the end, it was simply a pale imitation of Ju-on: The Grudge. 2020’s The Grudge dispenses with even more of the Japanese flavor of the story and replaces them with cheap horror-movie tactics.
Told non-chronologically (a staple of the series), detective Muldoon (Andrea Riseborough) and her son Burke (John J. Hansen) are settling in a new home. Her first case is a strange body found in the woods. The woman’s identity brings her to a home in which a violent murder took place years ago. The event put a stain on the house. Anyone who comes into contact with it suffers a horrific fate. The other stories follow the building's previous occupants: a live-in nurse (Tara Westwood as Fiona) who returns from Tokyo, the detective who responded to a 9-11 call in her home (William Matheson), Peter and Nina Spencer (John Cho and Betty Gilpin), real estate agents who sell the home after they’re gone, and the Mathesons (Frankie Faison and Lin Shaye), the couple who buy the property.
Jump scares are like aces in a hand of poker. Once you hit five, everyone will call you a cheater. There’s nothing wrong with surprising the audience with a grotesque face, some gore or a spirit that wasn’t there in the previous shot. Recent horror winners like The Conjuring, Hereditary or Insidious have memorable jump scares you’re still having nightmares about. The thing is, those movies earned them by placing those surprises in settings drenched with atmosphere, unease, and dread. In 2020’s The Grudge, we’ve moved from Japan to the horrifying, exotic land of… Pennsylvania! (making the recurring number 4 completely meaningless). The principal ghost is a standard rotting zombie that disappears once the light gets turned on. Nothing about it grabs your attention. Tons of characters, 90% of them destined to die. Elderly scream queen Lin Shaye has a couple of disturbing moments but they don't feel unique. Everything we see, we’ve seen before.
If you’re a gore-hound, there’s plenty of it here. So much that certain deaths will make you wonder how many fluids a human body actually contains. I'll also credit the sound design. As we ramp up towards the predictable scares, the familiar croak of Kayako (Junko Bailey) is well blended into other background noises to make you believe the characters who hear it are unsure if it’s just their minds playing tricks on them.
Even if you’ve only seen some or none of the previous movies in the series, there’s nothing in 2020’s The Grudge to be excited about. Sony is releasing it in January, hoping you will look at the other films playing next door and say “what do critics know? Those award-nominated films are probably no good, regardless of what everyone is saying”. It's the worst thing playing right now. See anything else. (Theatrical version on the big screen, January 4, 2020)
