Lottie Hendricks: On the Edge of Desperation

Lottie chose her specialization (Magical Herbs and Applied Sciences) after her baby brother died. So now she works to make up for the fact that she was so useless and had to watch him fade away. Her mother works as a laundry maid and so she tries to help out anyway she can. Often that means entertaining her siblings while trying to simultaneously finish classwork. She’s overcompensating for the losses her family has gone through in order to make her mother feel like the money and time to put her through school was worth it. 

Occupation: Full-time babysitter, full-time student

Emerson Pierce: Don’t Rock the Boat

Emerson is the character that hasn’t been pushed yet. He’s focused on not rocking the boat too much, but this stems from not wanting to disappoint the people around him. He believes consistency and the ability to stay the same is what will keep his friends and his girlfriend. He refuses to grow. 

Occupation: Full time student, part time mechanic

Darji: Going Home

Darji was abandoned on Bibi’s stoop. She has no tribe and when Bibi passes away, leaving her with the tea shop, she is torn between keeping it running and wanting to find her tribe. Through a friend’s connections she realizes she’s too different. She fits neither in Kheles, nor in her home country. She wants to go home. But it takes her a while to realize that home isn’t always a place. 

Occupation: Court & Thorn owner

Beckett West: Handcrafted By Yours Truly

Beckett is the leader of the ragtag group. Not by intentionally dominating or flashing his badge (which he didn’t have at the beginning), but out of the others’ choice. He’s trying to get as far away from the upper class as he can. Not because he hates his parents, but he wants to be judged worthy by his own merit and grit. He’s spitting out the silver spoon. Which can often be confused with hating his privilege and being rebellious, but it goes much deeper than that.

Occupation: Vanguard (AKA the cops)

Julien Desai: Thug. Depth. Loyal.

Julien has a shit family. It’s manipulative, abusive and he got out as quick as he could. He wants to be asked no more or no less than to be who he is. He’s found most of that in the Heathens, and so he’ll fight for them until he’s a bloody pulp. But when a certain redhead storms in, he’ll figure out how to rise again to keep them all safe.

Kit Cadel: Wild. Passionate. Fierce. 

She loudly wants a name for herself, but there’s something more to it. She wants justice. She wants to be sure that what happened before will never happen again. She is doing that in the only way she knows how. She screams for freedom of speech not simply to keep higher-ups from sweeping things under rugs, but to keep the government in check. To keep the Vanguard in check. She slaves away on story after story, trying to find someone to take her side. 

Occupation: Journalist
