The young girl, aged beyond her years by fear, desperation, and madness, had been sleeping quite well underneath the tree she’d chosen. Homeless, packless, the nights were rarely as peaceful as this. Or so she had let herself believe when she’d finally settled down for the night. They were alone. They were supposed to be alone! After running so far and so long she’d actually believed they’d found peace.

At the first touch of the pony’s voice in Daine’s mind, she shot to her feet. Her pack was already prepared; she never went to sleep any other way. She didn’t say anything before she snatched the knapsack and started sprinting. Whatever threat it was Cloud had sensed, Daine wasn’t fool enough to stick around to find out.
