Mastery : New Media & Communications Journal Entry
As one of the final assignments for NMC, we have to reflect on our timeline that we created from our introductory course at Full Sail University.
Back in August, this was what I created as my timeline. Definitely naive, I had no idea I would learn as much as what I did in this course. My goals were pretty much simple, get business cards done and start working out again. Pretty simple, huh?
Well, I can say that I have completed those two goals (half-way). I have reached out to a company to create my business cards and received the invoice for such; and as of this past Thursday I have enrolled at a VERY local gym. I said half-way because I have to follow through on both, but I am very happy that I have taken the steps to finishing this goal.
Stepping away from the “Look at me! I did a good job,” feeling of this post, I’m excited to have a little bit more knowledge of journalism in these times than I did when I entered NMC. As is evident from the Timeline Goal, I just stated that “New Media & Communications Begins” because I had no idea what I’d learn.
Here’s just a brief snippet of what I did:
Roy Peter Clark’s Pyramid of Journalism Competence (i.e. Storytelling, Numeracy and Mission Purpose to name a few)
Story Essential Elements (i.e. Who, What, When, Where, Why, How but also the “modern” journalism concepts of “So What” and “Now What.”)
Finding and Identifying an Audience (i.e. Who am I writing for, who could make up my audience, and how to interact with them)
There is so much that I took from NMC that could be applied to my professional and my personal life. I learned the importance of having “a beat”, places, people and events that are ridden with stories to be chronicled and documented. I discovered more of what type of journalist I am and how to take personal accounts and stories I find interesting and make them into stories that multiple people can identify with and get into. And most important, I started my blogspot where I can actively write, grow and develop as a journalist.
NMC was a fun class and I’m happy I did learn what I did (and I have the presentations to back it up). Can’t wait to further myself on this Mastery Journey in Month 3 with Writing for Interactive Media.
