Plant of the Day
Tuesday 20 August 2019
The Kale Yard Cafe is in the walled garden of Boath House, Nairn, Scotland, and many of the plants go from the garden to the plate but it was an ornamental grass, Stipa gigantea (golden oats, giant oats), that caught my attention. The oat-like, long-awned purplish flowers had ripened to gold and formed a transparent curtain above the evergreen, clump forming leaves. The plant needs full sun and space to grow so the seed heads do not get tangled with other plants.
