I am always just...so delighted when someone podfics one of my stories or messes around in one of my universes, and I am so bad at sharing them. I've had some of these tabs open in my browser under the "fandom" tab group for goddamn ever. But I want to declare an amnesty for anything I might have lost/forgotten at end of year, so before that happens I want to link the ones I DO have! So here, have some podfic bounty.
These are all just so fun and lovely and I am going to do my utmost to be more timely about them next year!
@cookiemom6067 has podficced the first two Foodieverse fics. (Marvel, Steve/Tony, chef au)
@thelaithlyworm has podficced The Scandal of Sleepy Hollow (lesbian masc!Ichabod retelling of Sleepy Hollow)
@venbeth has podficced That's Why They Call It A Gift (Good Omens and Black Books crossover, Aziraphale/Crowley, written pre-miniseries)
@aethel has podficced Handler (Marvel/Torchwood crossover) twice! Both versions are at the link.
Carboncopies has podficced Moons Over My Applebee's (anthropomorphic restaurant AU, Dennys/Applebee's)
@1lostone has podficced A Metaphor Of Some Kind (Good Omens, Aziraphale/Crowley, S1 ending AU)
There are a ton of other podfics and translations of my works as well as related works at my AO3 profile. Hope you all enjoy and thanks to everyone who has honored my work with their own touch!
6. What’s one fact about the universe of the Sleeping Crowley fic that you didn’t get a chance to mention in the fic itself?
3. What are some tropes or details that you think are very characteristic of your fics?
12. Are there any tropes you used to dislike but have grown on you?
OMG @thelaithlyworm, thank you so much for your patience in waiting for a response. I have had A YEAR and probably MORE THAN A YEAR if I'm to be honest and it feels like just now my brain is clearing up and I'm feeling healthier. I just uploaded a chapter of something that should also help answer #6.
What’s one fact about the universe of the Sleeping Crowley fic that you didn’t get a chance to mention in the fic itself?
The wattle-daub shelter in Chapter 1 is a shelter from Crowley's memories, and a painful memory at that. Unconsciously, he's built for himself a replica of the shelter that he lived in briefly with his Nephilim children, back in very ancient times. I wrote about it in the Alexander Romance story, and have finally sat down to properly break it out into its own short story that you can read if you like: A Daughter of Eve. Warnings though, this story is SAD.
I think in Sleeping Crowley, something about the forest, the pain and isolation and betrayal that Crowley feels, has prompted him to put himself in this sad little shelter from his memories. This particular shelter gets destroyed entirely and unintentionally by Aziraphale saving Crowley, but the other one, the real one from Crowley's past, still exists out there somewhere with a fire miraculously burning with no smoke. I like to think that Aziraphale helps overwrite/put behind some of the trauma, by that motion of collapsing/destroying the shelter behind him as he flies away.
What are some tropes or details that you think are very characteristic of your fics?
Besides the history and the worldbuilding details? Contrasting emotions, contrasting characters. A funky mix of emotionally moving with occasional dashes of comedy. I like to try for stories that have all sorts of different emotions involved.
Are there any tropes you used to dislike but have grown on you?
I'm kind of not super fond of Childhood Friends, notably the kind where the kids are extremely young when they meet (single digit ages) and fall in love forever. There's quite a bit of research I read a long time ago about marriage customs in imperial China that suggest that this is very much not a thing. IIRC it's because prior to a certain age, if children are raised together, they don't become sexually compatible in the future as adults because they think of each other more like siblings. I find that I'm less squicked by Childhood Friends if they meet later as adolescents (like high schoolers).
As an extension of Childhood Friends, I'm also not fond of the trope where the one person our protagonist meets first/sleeps with first/falls in love with first turns out to be The Only Possible One True Love to the Exclusion of Anyone Else. I find myself especially uneasy about this trope given the statistics regarding nonconsensual first times in women. Not that fiction needs to be like real life, but as a trope, this sort of first time as the first and only true love often intersects with lack of consent too. Not that that sort of romance can't exist at all, but one wonders, is there a moment years later when a protagonist wakes up and realizes, wait, this relationship is founded upon trauma…
However, I have been playing with the Childhood Friends trope in my current story Fell, possibly because in part that protagonist wakes up someday in the future to recognize the failings of that first love. So maybe it's grown on me but in a way that is not necessarily the way it was originally designed?
For the writing ask meme: How much research do you tend to do for fics? Any preferred sources?
[From this ask meme]
Really depends on my mood. Am I in the "just wing it and get this thing out" mood? The "fuck around and find out" mood? The "if I don't accurately get the correct map of 17th century Paris, I will spontaneously combust" mood? Who knows?
This is gonna sound really fucked up because it was certainly not the most FUN fic to write, but I have to say The Isle of Hope (and the sequel). I’m really proud of myself for being such a huge bitch. Also there needs to be more Silverham? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
14. a fic you didn’t expect to write
Haha while there are many great candidates, I think I have to go with The Piratehood of the Traveling Penis because HOW COULD I HAVE BEEN EXPECTED TO EXPECT THIS????
24. favorite fic you read this year
Well I already recced “With Strange Aeons” but to change gears and fandoms completely... Listen here. So, um. ... Have you ever wanted to read a novel length fix-it fic of Avengers: Infinity War? With SO MUCH Thorki action (over 100K words of it in fact) that you go just a little cross eyed? Well, wait no more. The Price is um... worth it ;)
The Porthos whump-fest that is my prompt fill for the Day 7 Whumptober theme Support/Carrying. I had planned on writing something else for this day but oh well.
25. A fic you read this year you would recommend everyone read
Oh, there are many, many such fics, how am I expected to choose only one?

Did they stick to the same routine of vigorous cuddling in the wee morning hours???
Polk did -- Dearborn was off making mischief elsewhere :D But it was particularly crazy this morning because it blended with a dream I was having, so I thought Polk was trying to get me out of bed in order to go do something from the dream. So It was like, ANXIETY cuddling.

it's so in charater, how dearborn sits properly and watches, while polk is up front sideways and in the way ^^
It really is, and it’s how they almost always do it when they watch. That said, Dearborn gets in much DEEPER shit than Polk because Polk always goes for the obvious, while Dearborn’s the one who spends like three hours looking at a table going “I bet I could get onto it if I took a flying leap from that shelf.”

Well. Franklin adapted an instrument that was already out there - tuned singing glasses were a fad at the time - so it was less, "from the depths of his fevered imagination," and more, "trying to make a more practical version" but yes, glass harmonica are pretty cool.
That’s true, and something I should acknowledge, that he didn’t invent the idea of ringing watered glass, just the structure from that image. Still, it’s...a hell of a structure. :D
