What to do if you missed school for a long time
Wether it be a physical or mental health problem, sometimes missing school for more than a week is indispensable. I’ve spent six weeks in a mental health ward and was not able to do any school work during this time but I still passed all of my following exams with quite good grades. Here are some things that really helped me to get back on track.
Talk to your teachers. If you can, talk to them before you’re leaving school and briefly explain your situation. You don’t have to go into detail, just explaining that you will be absent for a while can spare you a lot of issues. Writing an email is also a good option
Find someone who will collect notes and worksheets for you. Ask one person in every class you attend to collect all the worksheets for you so when you’re back in school you have the material to slowly catch up with your class and revise for upcoming exams. Try to find someone with a good attendance to make sure you really get everything.
Write down thinks you don’t understand. When you’re back in class, try to follow as best as you can and write everything down you don’t get or still have questions about. You can search for answers at home or ask the teacher or a class mate to explain it to you.
Don’t expect too much. I’m one of those people who, even though I have a horrible work ethic, still expects top grades from themselves. But it’s important to realise that it’s just not realistic to get an A in every single class when you missed a lot of lessons. And that’s ok. You will be able to bounce back. But take your time and don’t put too much pressure on yourself. No one works effectively under emotional pressure.
Do a little bit of catching up each day. You don’t want to sit at your desk one day before an exam and just noticing how much stuff you haven’t learned yet. So try to do a little bit of work throughout the week. Wether it’s just reading in the textbook or taking notes.
Take breaks. Don’t overwork yourself. I know you want to do good in school but your physical and mental health is so much more important. It’s ok to have days where you do nothing after school. It’s also ok to leave school early if you feel like everything is too much right now. You know yourself best so try and listen to what your body or mind needs.
