Hi there! A friend and I were discussing movie sortings, and we've noticed that more often than not movie protagonists are always sorted into Gryffindor (not by you guys, just in general). We both feel as though this only happens because movie characters are almost always put into situations that requires them to act bravely or with other Gryffindor traits. Surely sortings should be much more deep than that though and apply beyond the situation. How do you feel about it?
I think the film industry has a tendency to recreate very similar characters in similar roles over and over again. While obviously most movies are actually different, they have a habit of making the protagonist brave and chivalrous, the antagonist cunning and ambitious, and someone’s sidekick (the protag or antag or both) is usually loyal and hardworking (but also kind of dumb and a total sweetheart, which really just lends more crap towards the negative stereotypes of Hufflepuff) and some then there’s some oddball who gets dragged into helping even though they’d rather just work on their random project/hobby/life’s work, but because its relevant suddenly the protag cares about them.
While obviously not every film falls into this habit, quite a lot do, which makes it really hard for people like us to sort characters into anywhere but the stereotypical houses.
For some reason Hollywood can’t fathom someone being ambitious, but not a complete asshole who is out of touch with their family. They can’t wrap their head around someone who is heroic and worth focusing on that is actually a total scaredy cat. And they struggle with the idea of putting a “boring” hardworker or a “weird” person with a love of learning in a main role.
It seriously kills me every time someone harps on us for putting a villain in Slytherin when we would really have to struggle to tie them to anywhere else because of what the movie makers have done to them.
(Also this totally doesn’t just apply to movies. It applies to tv shows, books, comics, and just about any other method of storytelling that is produced for mass consumption)
