He knew he shouldn't be, it wasn't as if some creature was going to pounce on him in the middle of a mortal crowd; well, in retrospect, that was actually very likely. He'd gotten through the department store to find some clothes he could buy, because wearing the same thing for ... longer than he should, can get a little revolting.

He avoided people generally, a single touch could trigger him; annoying how that is really - but it wasn't like he could do anything about it at all.
