I watched 4 episodes of Lena Waithe’s show titled “Them” and I wasn’t feeling it, conflicted on the subject might I add. There’s more racism than there is horror. This is just straight black trauma and so far the black folks weren’t winning. No matter how traumatic, productions like this will always have an audience.

On the other hand, I understand that black life is complex and nuanced and we should have shows/entertainment that celebrate that but I'm not running away from the truth and the truth is that when black people during that time period moved into white neighborhoods they were terrorized. It shouldn't be glamorized but it shouldn't be ignored either. How do you tell that story without telling the truth of what our people experienced? Some of them were victims of racial violence. I understand the need to tell our stories, even the grim ones but at what point is it ok to draw the line?

The entire storyline revolved solely around black american trauma and I didn’t find it entertaining the least bit. Shows like this are not created for black consumption, it seems to be for white people to revel in their own racist fantasies.

We deserve better representation outside of slavery, gang violence, drug dealing and police brutality. I also want black love stories that don't end in death or heart break.

Now, I'm not saying we shouldn't have any movies that pertain to the more serious or negative aspects of Black American history or experiences, BUT we need more balance.

Other races don’t get their trauma thrown back in their face for entertainment EXCEPT black people. Lena won’t get nay’ more views from me.
