Love Actually: Aerys Targaryen

With the still steadily declining worth of the Targaryen Steel Corp, Aerys Targaryen, the loose CEO and one of the few Board of Directors members still with the company, has been aiming to improve press.  Sadly, when one nosy reporter leaked the secret of his schizophrenia to the media, the company’s public popularity hit near rock-bottom, leaving him more than a bit desperate when it comes to his children.

Despite his age of 65, the oldest Targaryen seems in decent health, though some report he looks more and more sickly as his company seems to be hitting it’s death-throws.  Rumors run rampant that the old Steel Corporation will collapse altogether, although somehow they seem to find the money to pay their taxes and workers, without a lawsuit in sight in the last few years.

In the meantime, Aerys himself has seemed to reconnect with his once-close friend Tywin Lannister.

     Some tiny part of the king wanted to scream at his own actions…wanted to beg the forgiveness of the boy before him, or, gods, even beg him to end it, to cut him down where he stood and end this…burning, fiery madness.

     But it was a small part only, and the rest looked at the boy before him with something like a sneering smile…but his violet eyes twisted with a fire, something dark and cruel…something wrong.  The madness was seldom not seen, these days it seemed to be all he saw the world through…all he was capable of using as a filter of his reality.

     “Your father screamed, boy.  Boiled alive in his own armor.  A pity about your brother…the more he fought to save him, the more surely he himself was killed.”

      there was a tiredness seeping through his done, his grip tightening around the hilt of his sword. anger began to flare up, the lord tired of all the fighting, tired of everything. he wanted it to end and there was only one outcome now. the only outcome would end up with either himself or the mad king on the ground, blood dripping through the cracks.

      “you’ll pay for that.” a hiss of anger from the child lord. he was an adult but in the eyes of the gods and the older lords, he was nothing more than a boy lord. at he age of nineteen he had lost everything due to this man and his family before him. “they didn’t do anything to you.” an injustice that would shape ned’s choices for the rest of his life. something that he would remember and never commend other’s to fall upon that fate.

      “they didn’t deserve that!” his temper flaring, the very temper that all the starks held. it was rare but ned raised his sword, pointing it at the mad king. “you’re worse than they say. you don’t deserve to sit upon that throne. you’ve disgraced your gods and your ancestors.”

Jon still couldn’t believe what his father had told him. Beginning with the fact that he wasn’t his father. Jon was adopted, Jon was the son of his father’s sister, and so his father has become his uncle. His record producer, his grandfather. His siblings weren’t his siblings at all, now they were all cousins. 

It was all jumbled in his head. Aerys was his grandfather, Eddard was his uncle. That was all that was clear. He didn’t truly understand why Eddard had to lie to him, to the others, to Catelyn, for his whole life, or what really happened to Lyanna and Rhaegar and why Eddard took him.

It dawned on him that he’d been sitting in the diner for hours, thinking and being completely blank in disbelief. He didn’t leave in bad spirits, and the relationship between Jon and Ned would hopefully remain as strong as it had ever been. All he was, was shocked. He didn’t know what to make of it all, or what to do about it. He could go home, and bum around with his guitar, or ...I could go and visit Aerys. After all, Aerys was a part of this...this news. It’s like becoming a rocker was in my blood after all. He joked to himself, sharing a small smile with his reflection before turning back to the coffee on the cheap, peeling table. 

He drained the mug, and left a large tip for the waitress who’d filled his cup...how many times, he’d lost count. The fluorescent lights washed him out, and he looked ghostly amidst all the black he wore. Once back out on the street, he orientated himself and started off in the general direction of Aerys’ penthouse. His feet must have known where to go, because before long, he was standing before the door and knocking softly.

Getting Loras to leave the king’s guard at been easy it had been an order, loud and clear, telling his lover to fuck off and go home. and the youngest of the  Tyrell sons had jumped at the chance. 

Rhaenys were more difficult. burning with dragon fire and the fierceness of Dorne. Aegon found that dismissing her from court would be far more difficult. 

I’m not going to hurt them, i can not hurt them if  they are not here, i won’t hurt them.

The Targaryen king whispered to himself, running  his fingers though his silver locks.

        Aerys snorted bitterly, and violet eyes turned to look at his Hand once more as wry amusement glittered in their depths.  But it was better than the madness that usually enveloped his mind, and even if Tywin might take offense at the amusement, it felt far better for the still-young king to express it than pretend it didn’t exist.  It wasn’t often he got to express it…not him, anyway.

       “Which, my Lord Hand?  The madness…or the sanity?  And which do you prefer?” he asked, though the dry sarcasm was evident as he winced.  He didn’t need a mirror to know he obviously hadn’t shaved, nor that he had barely eaten.  That wasn’t usual of the madness, usually he loved his food and wine in such states…which made him try to think through the fog and remember whatever had been distracting him of late.  Most likely…just his own paranoia.

       “It’s the middle of the day, Lord Tywin…hardly the time for a king to retire.”

Mad or not, we both have our pretenses, don’t we my friend?  We both know my mind leaves me…but we must pretend otherwise, must we not?

       The thoughts were as bitter as his words, but he sighed and rubbed his eyes to try and work the headache out of his skull.  The transition between his relatively sane self and his madness usually left him with a jarring headache.  When going into his madness, this made him volatile.  When into his sanity, it made him dreadfully tired, even if he was slowly getting better at masking that.        And even if those moments of sanity were becoming rarer than he liked.

Aerys had loved word games, since he was a child. Picking holes in the masters’ words, running rings around everyone, Tywin included. How does one rebuke the Crown Prince? Besides, it was Aerys – and his fifteen year old self had had too few friends worthy of his time that he was willing to overlook some things. Things that he was glad had survived the madness thus far, when much else had faded.

“I prefer my King and friend safe and well. However that comes to be.” In Aerys’ madness, Tywin would say as little as possible – to avoid waking the Dragon. Anything he did say was now guarded, save small, largely inconsequential statements. You were kind to me. I remember. Even as Tytos Lannister languished under the spell of his whore of a mistress, Aerys had not treated him as less than a Royal Page, a companion, a friend. After Castamere and the Coronation, they were still as such – only now they were men, no longer boys, and it showed.

“Your Grace, you are the King. When you retire or rise is your prerogative and yours alone.” Carefully worded, to try and forestall any wilful outbursts – ‘I am the king! Everyone is beneath me’ was a moment which particularly came to mind – and such was their discourse. Tywin had enjoyed word games too.

“Shall I send for Maester Pycelle? The old fool might be of some use, he does occasionally do his job properly, I suppose.” An attempt at levity, perhaps ill-advised, but...a part, admittedly small, of Tywin missed his friend. He had so few, after all.

Joanna had wondered into the bedroom looking for greatest female friend when she happened upon the maddening King. He was shaking and sobbing from what she could tell. "Areys? Are you well my friend?"
