Is this an Elder Millennial's dad thing? because this is almost exactly the recipe my dad used when he made us play dough in the 80s, but I don't recognize the book....
I’m sure it was passed around in parenting circles back in the day -- the recipe is also IN the book so I’m not sure why he wrote it in the cover, but we also made it in school and camp, so...

Thanks to you and your dad, Sam! I'll use it while in self-quarantine with my toddler. Cheers!
I should just take some photos of my favorite recipes in the book. The vinegar balloon trick is in there too I think...

I have that book at my library! I am using to post ideas for parents trying to keep their kids busy.
It’s such a classic. And so very late-hippie-parents -- there’s something so incredibly era-specific about the art.

I have a recipe somewhere for corn pudding in my great-aunt's handwriting (she was like a grandmother to me, for that side of the family). I don't actually *like* the recipe, but it makes me smile
Yeah, I have a bunch in my mother’s handwriting -- she sends them every once in a while. She and my grandmother both used to store letters and cards in books so they’d find them by surprise years later, so whenever she gives me a recipe she tells me “If you don’t use it, put it in a book” :D
For the DVD commentary thingy, how about We Could Be Heroes starting from "As it turns out, their big plan to steal the Jewel of Valencia from the Valencian Museum of Natural History...." to where ever you feel like ending it? (also I just re-read the whole thing and there were a lot of really fun details I missed the first time so I'm basically in a state of yay right now!)
(Picked a random spot to end at! No idea if it’s under or over 500 words, but I’m clearly playing fast and loose with that anyway.)
As it turns out, their big plan to steal the Jewel of Valencia from the Valencian Museum of Natural History, where it's on display with other local gemstones, mostly relies on Madalena's superpowers and a few thieves' tools that anyone with respectable underworld connections can get in under twenty-four hours.
Do most Natural History Museums have jewels in them? I’m pretty sure when I went to the one in Denver they did, so I went with it here.
Really, it's such an easy plan that Galavant isn't sure why they haven't done it already and skedaddled right back out of town.
“I don't like this,” he says on the night of the heist, frowning at Isabella, who looks even more frazzled than he feels. She's been increasingly twitchy in their meetings over the past few days while they prepared to apprehend Madalena and Richard and the whole gang. “And clearly you don't like this either. Scale of one to ten, how important is this jewel?”
She rolls her eyes at him. “Oh, I don't know, twenty-three? Pride of the city, put Valencia on the map, mythical source of all superpowers in the city, you know the stories. Nobody wants it stolen!”
Fun fact: twenty-three is one of my go-to random numbers. If I need a date or a number like this, 23 and 37 are for some reason the first ones I always jump to. Also, I am not 100% sure how the Jewel of Valencia gave people superpowers. I think it’s some kind of deal where someone held it up to the light during an eclipse and suddenly people within the city limits discovered they had superpowers. It definitely made the news!
“Yes, but all my instincts are screaming that this is a trap. You can't tell me your instincts do not tell you this is a trap. Can't we just move the jewel or something?”
“That seems like a really good idea,” says Sid, who is six inches tall and doing something with the security system around the jewel. “I don't know why that wasn't Plan A.”
Sid is the only person in this story who reliably knows what he’s doing. People should really listen to him more often.
Isabella sighs at them both. “Moving it would preserve the jewel, but it also would give us no chance to actually catch them, which we would like to do. We have plenty of backup, even if it's a trap we'll be fine.” And she looks unhappy again. Galavant really doesn't like this.
“Sid, back me up here. This is definitely a trap, right?”
Sid hops onto the floor and goes back to his proper size. “I mean, statistically, I would not be shocked. Isabella, are you sure we shouldn't have a few more failsafes?”
She gets the sort of look on her face that action heroes in movies start pulling out right before they say things like “This is just how things have to be.” “This is just how things have to be.”
I cracked myself up writing that paragraph. I’m not afraid to admit it.
Galavant makes a mental note to check and see if he is developing clairvoyance along with his other superpowers. “You are not inspiring confidence right now.”
“You're not inspiring confidence right now,” says a voice from the shadows, and then continues “Oh, damn it, Gareth, you've really got to stop me before I waste my entrance lines like that.”
Richard and his terrible entrance lines give me such joy on the show--I’m glad that joke carried through into the second season! One of my favorite little canon things, and if there’s any story perfect for them, it’s a superhero story.
Richard. Within a second, Galavant and Sid are in fighting stances, and Isabella is … not. Galavant gives her a puzzled look as Richard and Gareth and Madalena come lurking out of the shadows. They should not have made it past security without any alarms going off, especially considering Isabella arranged extra security and backup tonight. Or at least said she did. Galavant has a really bad feeling about this. “Just back off, Richard, and we can settle this peacefully.”
“See, his are much better than mine, I need to work on that.”
Richard cares very much about his image.
“Richard,” Madalena hisses, and elbows him in the side. Galavant knows from experience that she has very sharp elbows.
“Right, right.” He rubs his hands together. “Well, well, well, Detective Valens. We meet again. I think I can take things from here, and you'll find that your parents are quite safe.” He looks at Gareth, who is still looming. “I still think it would have been better if I'd been able to start with that.”
Okay, I really liked this joke. Plus, honestly, it’s much easier to concentrate on entrance line jokes than it is to concentrate on Isabella’s betrayal.
re: killjoys - i watched it after seeing you post about it and now i am in love (Dutch and Johnny are perfection!) and want all the fic and/or meta. sadly i can't find a lot, so i'm wondering if killjoys is just a canon in search of a fandom or if you know of any secret tumblr enclaves i haven't been able to dig out yet?
It’s a canon in search of a fandom! A whole bunch of people seem to be offering it/requesting it for Yuletide this year, and I’m hoping that some people get matched on it and we get some amazing fic out of it, because I love this canon so much and it deserves all the fic and meta!
If you want some gifsets on your dash, a lot of the ones I see come through @killjoyspodcast, but I don’t know of any good spots for meta, or even if there’s a particular tag that fans hang out in! The “killjoys” tag is pretty MCR-heavy, but I don’t know if “killjoys syfy” or “syfy killjoys” or something else is getting the most traffic.
Someone needs to make one of those powerpoint things to drag people into this canon, it’s so wonderful and I want to see the stories people come up with! I think it’s a little tough because there’s not really a Big Romantic Ship (I mean, there’s the show’s ship, and I like that fine but I am not Obsessed, and I love Dutch and Johnny but a lot of people do not romantically ship them) and it’s hard to get traction as a gen fandom.
But hey, I’ll say it again, if anyone out there wants a gorgeous woldbuildy sci-fi adventure show whose main character is an amazing woc, just ask me and I will tell you all the reasons you should watch Killjoys!
