Theme Tuesday: Fantasy
This week, I want to talk about the genre of Fantasy. This is actually a very broad genre because it has many different types and branches. I won't bore you with every single one of them. I will just touch on the reason why I write Fantasy, and my favorite components.
I've always had a love for fantasy. From Disney's Cinderella, to my first ever High Fantasy series, The Avalon series by Marion Zimmer Bradley, the genre and I have had a great relationship. So it was no real surprise to me when I decided that my first novel was going to be in the fantasy genre. The real surprise was the sub-genre.
I love the fantasy genre because it has always allowed me to become someone I wasn't in the real world. I have lived my entire life with many limitation due to Cerebral Palsy. When I sit down in front of the computer, my abilities as an author are endless, and I love to create characters that do amazing things. What better way to accomplish this than to write fantasy? My preferred sub-genre of fantasy is New Adult (apparently the new “young adult”) urban fantasy.
This covers many types of writing: Faeries, Vampires, Witches, magic of any kind, really. It also covers Dystopian/Post-apocalyptic novels, as well as most science fiction. This gives me a grand scope to work with. I have already had my hand in many of these sub-categories already. Yet, I am always learning and discovering thing I want to try.
So far I have written paranormal fantasy and dystopian. Of the two of these sub-genres, I have really enjoyed paranormal fantasy the most. It has the most creative freedom, and it's fun to add my own take on a genre that has been saturated with every kind of paranormal creature you can think of. My favorite creature to write for is actually those that have psychic ability of some kind. Most of my paranormal characters have some form of psychic ability. I have been fascinated with this for as long as I can remember, starting with the book, The Girl With The Silver Eyes by Willow Davis Roberts, who, along with E.B. White and Frances Hodgson Burnett, was one of my earliest influences.
This year, it is my goal to actually get a first draft of my first dystopian novel, The Infinites, out on paper (well, on the word processor. You know what I mean)! Next week, I'll talk a bit more about my struggle to move from paranormal to a bit more structure writing The Infinites.
