This is the third book in a series of highly recognised REDD+ volumes from CIFOR. It provides an analysis of actual REDD+ design and early implementation, based on a large research project – the Global Comparative Study on REDD+ (GCS), undertaken by CIFOR and partners. It takes stock of national, subnational and local REDD+ experiences, and identifies the political and practical challenges to designing and implementing effective, efficient and equitable REDD+ policies and projects. This report by the World Meteorological Organisation sets out the importance of global observing systems, including space-based systems, in gauging the various threats resulting from climate change. It explains how the UN uses the information provided by space-based technologies in monitoring the climate system and supports decision making on adaptation, prediction and mitigation. The report includes sections on global observing systems, the relevant activities of UN organisations, as well as those of organisations outside the UN system.

'Green growth' may work well in creating new growth impulses with reduced environmental load and facilitating related technological and structural change, but can it also mitigate climate change at the required scale (i.e. significant, absolute and permanent decline of GHG emissions at global level) and pace? This paper argues that growth, technological, population-expansion and governance constraints as well as some key systemic issues cast a very long shadow on the 'green growth' hopes.

This report underlines the important roles that water plays in all social, economic and environmental decisions, highlighting policy implications across various sectors, from local and municipal to regional and international levels. It provides an overview of status trends and challenges, including drivers of water consumption, water resource variability, water management, institutions and capacity development, moving from raw data to informed decisions, and regional challenges. It also addresses issues around working under uncertainty and managing risk, including risk and uncertainties associated with the key drivers, the problem of undervaluing water, transforming management institutions to deal with change, investment and financing for a sustainable future, and responses to risks and uncertainties, including through mitigation and adaptation to climate change.

Renewable energy sources contribute 16% of the global energy consumption and most nations are working to increase the share of renewables in their total energy budget to reduce the dependence on fossil fuel sources. Most Nordic and Baltic countries have already surpassed the target set for EU countries by 2020, to produce 20% of energy use from renewables like hydropower, solar energy, wind power, bio-energy, ocean power and geothermal energy. This publication presents results from a comprehensive research project that investigated the effects of projected future climate change on hydropower, wind power and bioenergy in the Nordic and Baltic countries, with focus on the period 2020-2050.

Despite its impact on people‘s livelihood in Malawi, climate change communication has not been prioritised. Resources for climate change communication are directed towards improving the capacity of journalists and the media houses. As a result, the communication process remains top-down with the public being recipients of information. This has led to Community Based Initiatives failure because there is no or less strategic investment in effective communication (climate change media partnership). Where communication has been bottom up, participatory video (PV) have been used for knowledge transferring amongst communities. This dissertation acknowledges the use of PV but argues that it is not sustainable in communicating climate change in Malawi. The paper argues that radio listening clubs are sustainable because they do not only empower communities with technical production skills, but they can provide a public space for community dialogue in climate change.

The global focus on the threats posed by climate change has drawn attention to the fact that water will be the medium through which many of its impacts will be felt. In addition to the direct impacts of damaging floods and interruptions to water supply due to drought, a particular concern in many regions is the threat to food security, driven by changing rainfall patterns and increased aridity. This paper synthesises findings from a workshop which brought together policy and decision-makers with researchers and pratitioners to address these issues of food and water security in Africa in particular.
