thinking of how Callum goes "it means I trust her, unconditionally" without hesitation about Rayla versus how his dark alter ego needles him with "I have always been a part of you [...] you can trust me now, trust yourself" but he argues and hesitates. Because on every fundamental level, he trusts Rayla more than he trusts himself

y'know given the way Viren reacts in 2x06 to very firmly being told No ("each of you standing here today, you betray humanity!") i would not be surprised if being told No by Kpp'Ar and Lissa in quick succession also registered as betrayals to him, ergo "they betrayed me first, so me treating them this way was acceptable" (a la Harrow one more time)

Think I meant to do this back when I was vaguely liveblogging my 3rd watch of S6 a few weeks ago, but hit me on said rewatch how much the Sunfire elf plotline is built around Betrayal.

Janai is betrayed by Karim staging a coup in late S4 with the duel of blood and ash, and Karim is betrayed by his own lack of understanding regarding his sister thanks to Amaya's influence in her life.

Then Miyana receives the sun seed and dips in S5, betraying Janai more heavily outright in favour of Karim. (You could also argue Kim'Dael's lack of loyalty is a betrayal of Karim, but I think it's interesting how centralized it is within the Sunfire royal family.) Janai accordingly calls Karim "treacherous" in S6 as well.

In S7, Karim betrays the traditional of a peaceful parlay by lying to Ezran / Corvus and taking them captive. But finally, Karim gets his comeuppance by relying on and being betrayed by Sol Regem, who got what he wanted (his wings healed) and was another pawn in Aaravos' game through his hold on Pharos.

Which I think reaffirms one of the most important lines of Janai's speech in 6x02:

This is such a contrast to Xanatos's offer of 'helping each other out,' and something I definitely wanted to keep my eye on was how the attempts at building trust between Xanatos and Elisa differ.

Xanatos has performed a grand gesture on behalf of the gargoyles because 'he wanted to know if it was true.' It likely doesn't feel like he's been totally honest with them. His answers are very precise and careful.

Elisa has spoken under her breath and spoken of herself personally in a way Xanatos hadn't. What's more, she hasn't offered any grand gesture to the gargoyles. In fact, Goliath saves her, and she doesn't even make the attempt to frame it as their fault for being scared. She is not trying to hold anything over their heads.

Elisa offers practical information. It's nowhere near some grand gesture, but it's practical and presented to Goliath in a manner he can connect with and understand the use of. Xanatos never even answered Goliath's question about how they can 'help each other out.'

Like I said before, I think it shows more effort toward community building than individual interests. It helps all of the gargoyles to know more about this new world. There is no attempt to guilt them or make them feel like they owe anything. If they can't understand Elisa's direct motivations (she still hasn't explained why she was in the castle), they can understand what drives her under this title of 'detective' in a way that 'business owner' is not going to make any sense to them from Xanatos.

I also really like the cut to the rest of the gargoyles. It's hard to show it in a cap, but there's a suggestion of a nod from them. Goliath doesn't need their permission, but it's good to have it.
