"Why did we drive to Poteeka?" "Topeka? Well... You remember when your friend Sara got hurt on the playground? And you ran and got the teacher and she helped her with her arm and you didn't leave her side? Why did you do that?" "She's my friend!" "And what did Mom and I teach you? What if she was just someone you knew a little from school?" "I would help her anyway." "Why?" "Because we help first ask questions later." "Now you understand?" "Yuh-huh. Your friend was hurting because of Jennifer being sick but it was an inside the brain hurt. And you wanted to come to help?" "Yes ma'am." "But why did you take me." "Because it's important that you know we don't just teach you WORDS. We show you when it's time to do. So you know we say what we mean..." "And mean what we say!" "Chief, there may be hope for you yet." Then we drove home in silence for a good hour before she dropped a random "I love you" on me. And out of many many times she blessed my ears with those words. This is up there on the list of specific ones to remember.
