If you’re up for a drabble request, what about Ragnor and Raphael learning how to text?
A Constant in Changing Times
Flufftober Day 7: A First Time
(Read on AO3)
“This is ridiculous, Magnus,” Ragnor snaps, looking down at the object in his hand with blatant disgust. “I don’t want it.”
“Too bad,” Magnus replies, handing an identical black, rectangular object to Raphael. “It’s 1997. Some cellular phones have the internet now. You’re at least going to learn how to send a text message.”
“I don’t see why I need a mundane telephone when I can send a fire message to anyone I need to contact,” Ragnor insists.
“And I don’t see why I need a mundane telephone when I can simply continue to avoid speaking with anyone at all costs,” Raphael adds.
Magnus rolls his eyes.
Ragnor’s stubborn annoyance at this entire thing is momentarily betrayed by the twitch of a small smile at Raphael’s comment, one that Raphael catches and returns. Though they hit it off from the first day they met, back when Raphael was newly turned, it took many years of building trust to reach the place they are now. Ragnor knows that if Raphael could avoid dealing with 99.99% of the people in his life he’d be perfectly content. Ragnor also knows that he falls within the .01% of people Raphael actually enjoys talking to and being with. It isn’t something he takes lightly.
“You’ll thank me one day,” he promises. “Just because we’re immortal doesn’t mean we want to be stuck in the past. Ragnor, you’ve been alive long enough to know the importance of adapting with the times. You aren’t exactly living in a cave scratching spells into rock now are you?”
“I’d rather be doing that than this,” Ragnor mutters, and while it pulls a short, sharp huff of amusement from Raphael, Magnus pretends not to hear either of them.
Magnus painstakingly goes over the basics - how to navigate the menu, where to add a new contact and scroll through the contacts they already have.
“Ragnor, you already have Raphael’s number and mine on your phone. Raphael, same with Ragnor’s and my numbers. I figured I’d put them in ahead of time in case you didn’t stay to actually figure them out and I just had to toss them at you and hope for the best,” Magnus admits.
“You mean leaving was an option?” Raphael sighs.
“Is leaving still an option?” Ragnor asks hopefully.
“I suddenly remember why it’s been so long since I was in the same room as the two of you,” Magnus says.
The only thing making this tolerable for Ragnor is the fact that Raphael is right beside him every step of the way, from fumbling with things that should be much easier than they are, in his humble opinion, to simply being there to make snarky comments back and forth to one another about the phones or about Magnus or about life in general. Raphael, someone he’s recently grown to view as one of his constants during these ever-changing times.
He’s tuned out a bit and nearly misses Magnus suggesting they call each other to test them out, focusing back in time to catch Raphael’s reply.
“Please, as if hearing your voice in person all night isn’t enough, now I must subject myself to it echoing in my ear while you’re two feet away?” Raphael quips.
“Fine, we’ll skip test calls and move to sending messages,” Magnus relents, before Ragnor can say anything.
“There has to be a way for me to get my magic to-” Ragnor starts, green magic licking at his fingertips, but Magnus shakes his head.
“Nope. No magic. The whole point of this is to have options if we’re somewhere we shouldn’t, or can’t, use magic,” Magnus reminds him.
Ragnor frowns at him. “Are you planning something? Is this all just some very elaborate preparation for you getting yourself wrapped up in trouble you can’t use magic in and needing to reach us to come bail you out?”
“Maybe he’s going to get himself kidnapped!” Raphael chimes in, the most animated he’s been since all this began.
“Honestly, the two of you are impossible. I’m going to take a break and get food, try not to set the phones on fire while I’m gone,” Magnus says, grabbing his coat and slipping quickly out of his apartment.
The moment he’s gone Raphael turns to Ragnor with a curious expression.
Ragnor arches an eyebrow. “Do you actually want me to set them on fire? Because I will.”
“No,” Raphael says. “I was going to suggest we teach ourselves to send a message before he gets back, to avoid more of his infuriating ‘Magnus knows best’ lecturing.”
They both willfully overlook the fact that, in this particular instance,, Magnus actually does know best. Having the phones is an objectively good idea. Not that either of them will ever admit it.
Ragnor hums in consideration, then nods. “Alright. The letters are right on the keys, I can’t see how difficult it could be.”
Five minutes later and with nothing but a series of ‘AAAAAAA’s typed from holding down the key, trying to get to the ‘B’, Ragnor might be able to admit to himself that it’s more difficult than it looks to figure out with no guidance.
“Got it!” Raphael exclaims, beaming, and already leaning over Ragnor to show him the way he has to hit it to switch to the next letter. After that break-through, the rest comes much easier. A few minutes later Ragnor hits the send button and watches Raphael look down after feeling the phone vibrate in his hands with Ragnor’s message.
Ragnor: I hate this, but thank you.
Raphael laughs. “You’re welcome,” he says out loud. “You know, now we can use these to talk about Magnus while he’s in the room without him knowing.”
Ragnor brightens up considerably at that. “This may not be as useless as I first thought.”
Between the combination of being able to annoy Magnus and speaking with Raphael more often, perhaps the idea of using the phone is growing on him faster than anticipated.
Magnus & Ragnor, 2) things you said through your teeth
GOSH, I was just thinking about how much I missed writing Ragnor! Thank you so much for sending this! Here is some hurt comfort for these two. Love this found family <3 (prompt list)
"It's nothing to worry about," Ragnor said, his face twisted into a grimace and he clutched his side. Blood was slipping through his fingers.
Magnus wasn't going to even dignify that with a response, as he turned back to dig through his medical supplies. "What attacked you?"
"I think it was an angry seelie?" Ragnor said, and didn't move from the couch he was laying across.
"You think?" Magnus tried to keep his irritation out of his voice, his fear and frustration.
"I was trying to purchase a rare book! How was I to know it had been stolen from the fey?" Ragnor tried to gesture, only to groan.
Moving back with poultices and fresh bandages, Magnus knelt at Ragnor's side. "You need to move your hand so I can inspect the wound," he prompted when it was clear Ragnor was going to continue to be stubborn.
"Really Magnus, I'm fine," Ragnor said and hissed in pain through his teeth. He was looking a little green, and Magnus hoped that was just because his glamour was slipping.
"Don't make me call Catarina," he threatened.
This got Ragnor to finally comply, and Magnus, with a flick of his wrist, removed the vest and shirt from around the wound, leaving a square hole in the fabrics. Now reveled, Magnus could see it was not a pretty wound, two deep gashes, and he summoned magic to his hand to run over it.
"Okay, no poison, and there doesn't seem to be any sign of infection settling in yet," Magnus relaxed, taking a deep breath to ground himself. He had pushed all his fear to the back of his mind since Ragnor wandered through the loft front door bleeding. Blinking away threatened tears of relief, he pushed his energy into healing, focusing on anything internal.
"I didn't want to worry you, my boy," Ragnor's voice wasn't as pained, and he rested a hand on Magnus' shoulder.
"I would rather be worried than have you not come to me for help," Magnus said back, looking up at Ragnor and meeting his eyes. "We're family, and we need each other sometimes."
Ragnor huffed but nodded. "It is easier to be the one doing the caring sometimes."
"None of us are good at asking for help," Magnus agreed with a small tired smile. "But we can work on that with each other."
Ragnor relaxed further into the sofa, his body no longer tense with pain. "Alright."
"Promise?"
"What?"
"That you won't be such an ass next time you need help?"
"You know I can't change my nature! ...But I will actually ask for help, how's that?" Ragnor's eyes were drifting shut now.
Magnus' smile was a little wider. "I'll accept that."
Ragnor hummed in acknowledgment before he slipped off to sleep. Magnus finished healing, pressing a clean bandage to what was left of the wound. Standing, he took the blanket from the back of the couch and tucked it around Ragnor.
"You're safe now, my friend," Magnus murmured, before picking up everything and heading back to bed himself.
I can resist any trope if it doesn’t fit well with canon lol. So that knocks out a lot of tropes from a lot of fandoms. But star-crossed/a little forbidden love seems to be something I fall for repeatedly, so if you can play that up from within the canon, great. Also a good old “there was only one bed” method of getting back together, I will take it!
Ok so probably a stupid question (and maybe this...
In the books, it’s an AU world almost exactly like you said, where demons have won over Shadowhunters. So I think it’s likely that it will be that in the show too. Demons come to other worlds because they can’t create anything, so their worlds end up dead.
Yeah, I was going off on that explanation from the books although it seems to me that the show is treating it more like your typical hell. At least so far. Will be interesting to see how that develops in s03.
Huh, that last bit is also interesting. It does in a way make sense for demons to be unable to create anything. But then why would it change if they come to a different world? Does the world affect them in a way to be able to produce things or something? They would still be the same demons regardless of their surroundings so it would make sense to not be able to create/get people pregnant even if they come into a different dimension.
Man, I wish CC had put half as much thought into all of these books as I did just writing up this one tiny post. 😂😂😂
OTP: Ragnor/a nice cup of tea and a good book, probably haha! My identity headcanon for him is kinda wobbly but probably would be aro/ace or aro/bi, so I don’t really see him with anyone romantically.
BrOTP: Magnus and Catarina for sure! And of course Raphael as well. I love that Ragnor was able to find this family/this family fell into his lap!
NOTP: Never really thought of it, but probably ships with him and any of the three above.
Favorite thing about them: I really love where he stands as an older immortal which is really dynamic and interesting. Also in this, the way he thinks he hides the way he cares about his little family with sarcasm! But really he always has their backs.
Least favorite thing about them: In the TV Show, that he was killed off and didn’t get to come back. >:( I would have loved to see him interact with Catarina and Madzie, and see him go to Magnus and Alec’s wedding! I think he and Catarina could have also giving Alec the shovel talk ha!
Send me a character name and I’ll tell you my OTP for them, Brotp, Notp, and my favorite/least favorite thing about them
