Field Notes: Mod

This is Ground have designed a wonderful carryall for the modern explorer. Their words:

The Mod is a full design system — not a singular item. It’s a new space to stow and carry items that are in your life. The concept was inspired by those old vintage portfolios that allowed for tricking out the interior with phone books, pencils, notebooks and little things. The Mod takes that concept and updates it with respect to modern day gear and today’s adventurer. ‘Mod’ifiable means you’re covered for your day job, after hours, weekends, alter ego, and dreams.

TIG sent me one as part of their beta program. I’ve had my Mod (“magnetically modifiable folio”) for a few days and already love it. Some notes:

I’ve long wanted a pouch to carry my essentials: iPad mini, notebook, spare battery, cords, sunglasses, headphones. The current options—backpack, messenger bag, satchel—are too much, too demanding. They were designed for a different time. The Mod fills this gap. Bring it to a meeting, the coffee shop, on the road, even within the office.

It’s beautiful: simple and sophisticated, not too serious. It’s sharp but not too precious. You get the sense that it will get better with age. I wouldn’t hesitate bringing it to a formal meeting or taking it camping.

Build quality is excellent. Nice leather, solid zipper and hardware.

Novel carrying method: with the folio by your side, you grip it and slip your fingers through the handle on its binding. It feels quite nice.

The Mod has many pockets and compartments of different sizes. This is good because you’ll likely be carrying small things that would get tossed around without the structure. It’s still generous enough to fit the oddball paperback.

There’s a clever “modular” insert system. They’ll have inserts for different purposes—writer, musician, executive—that snap right into its spine. I’m excited to get a couple of these.

These are my initial impressions. It’s nice to have something designed for today’s tools. Photos below.
