Moffat Appreciation Week - Day Seven - In Celebration of Steven Moffat
I could celebrate his humility and his thoughtfulness and his naughty sense of humour and all that he has given us (we would not have a female Doctor without Steven Moffat) but I’m just going to celebrate a small part of his genius: his production notes written for DWM (Doctor Who Magazine).
A small selection of my favourites (taken from reddit).
From his final column:
Rachel Talalay, our finale specialist, is directing. She's come back to see number 12 off into the shades but I very much hope she'll be directing more Doctor Whos in the future. She keeps hinting that she won't, though.
"You're already directing the new one - you're doing the regeneration!" "Yes, but apart from that." "You probably know who the new Doctor is, and everything!" "No, I don't" "You had a secret dinner with Matt Strevens and Old Chibs!" "It wasn't secret!" "Well, I didn't know about it." "No-one thought to tell you, it was just for people who are... you know..." "What?" "Involved."
I was alright after a bit, and the nurse with the oxygen was very nice.
"Who's the new Doctor?" I demanded to know from my stretcher, mostly in hand signals. "I don't know," lied Rachel, probably. "Just the initials." "I don't know." "Will you tell me if I cry?" "You're already crying." "... Would you like ten pounds?"
Will we ever get to see how the Doctor and Clara escaped his collapsed timestream of Trenzalore?
He turned round and walked out again, carrying Clara. Simple as that. But frankly it would have been clearer f Matt hadn't hurt his knee rather badly, and had been able to do the move!
In The Angels Take Manhattan, when the Doctor, Amy and River go into the hotel, why didn't they smash the angels? Can the Angels reconstruct themselves?
Yes, they can. Oh, they can. Next time you're on a beach, remember that sand is basically ground up stone. And be careful where you put your towel. Oh, hang on, that's not bad...
What was Vastra and Jenny's wedding like?
Victorian society reeled. Arthur Conan Doyle declined to attend but sent a hamper, George Bernard Shaw contemplated a new play, and a horse fainted. The Doctor enjoyed himself so much, he came four times, so wreaking havoc with the seating plan. A stern young woman from The Temperance League, attempted to disrupt the happy occasion, declaring it to be immoral, and got put in a headlock by Jenny. Surprisingly, Vastra was much more diplomatic about the interruption and just invited the young lady to dinner.
Fortunately, a video exists of the wedding, although the happy couple's kiss has been edited from some copies, without the permission of the video makers. Vastra has made a list of the people responsible along with some suitable condiments.
And finally, my favourite Moff contribution, on the Master and Missy meeting (written three years ago, long before World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls)
Oh, I’ve given it thought! Surely there’s fan fiction already? There must be - to your work, if not! The impossible one, of course, is the Delgado/Gomez simmer-fest - but oh, imagine! Hooded gazes at dawn! Sneers like sword slashes! Sexy prowls, cat-like circling! In no time flat, a country cottage, three kids and a Volvo.
One summer evening, as they both puff away in the cigar gazebo, watching the children (identical girl triplets, dead white and levitating) rebuilding the lawn mower into a nuclear reactor using Master Plan Q, the question inevitably arises…
THE MASTER: My dear, you've never exactly told me who you are. MISSY: You're always so busy, trying to drain the world's oceans, or rob banks with dinosaurs - THE MASTER: I just want the kids to have a future. MISSY: Then why do you keep trying to blow up the planet? THE MASTER Must we always take this attitude to my work? MISSY: Or freeze the polar ice caps. THE MASTER: That was a simple administrative error. MISSY: Don't you think there might be a clue in my name? THE MASTER: Missy? MISSY: Tiny bit of a clue? THE MASTER: I have long suspected there was some cunning word play involved. Some abtruse hint as to your true identity, of some fiendish complexity and subtlety that it eludes even my mighty Time Lord brain. Is it short for Mistress, though? MISSY: Yep. IN THE GARDEN, THE TRIPLETS OBSERVE THE TWO CIGAR TIPS GLOWING MORE BRIGHTLY FOR A MOMENT IN THE SHADOWS OF THE GARDEN. THE MASTER: My dear, do you think the triplets ever get lonely? AND FROM THE HAPPY HOME, THE REST IS SILENCE. EXCEPT FOR THE NIGHTLY SING-A-LONG OF THE ADDAMS FAMILY.
Goodbye you wonderful, kind man. Thank you so much for all you’ve done.
My favourite part of Hell Bent is that it was full of great female characters (Ohila, the Dalek Commander, Clara, Me) who were just so DONE with the Doctor and utterly refused to give into him. All his rage, all his planning, all his running... none of it did him any good. Clara still has control over her life (even if it’s just a heartbeat), Me's still defying him (having grown up and become more mature than him) and Ohila will still be there, waiting for him. Amazing.
Oh my God, look at that, Mary didn't die, the baby didn't die, and Mary wasn't evil! I wonder how many people are going to give Moff any credit for this, probably not as many as would rip him to shreds if he'd done anything else.
If the words "Written by Steven Moffat" don't make you quake with fear, you're watching the wrong television programs.
