Peter & the Wolf (2006) as directed by Suzie Templeton

This review is going to be extremely short, mainly due to the fact that this film is only 38 minutes long and has such a basic story.

Summary:

This tale revolves around a boy named Peter who lives mostly in solitude due to his overprotective grandfather and who's only friends are a duck, a lazy fat cat, and a bird that struggles to fly. At one point a wolf threatens his duck companion, and Peter bravely attempts to trap the wolf in a tree.

Story/Characters (they're really one in the same this time):

Nothing spectacular, but enjoyable nonetheless. The story flows nicely and as it progresses, gets quite tense and easily draws you in from the beginning. The characters are all enjoyable despite the lack of dialogue. Each one has a wonderful personality that's very likable for the entirety of the film, and they even get a few laughs out of you. The goose is lovable and absolutely adorable, the cat is nasty and absolutely hilarious at times with his attempts at being active (and the slapstick he's part of), and the practically flightless bird is very cute and enjoyable. Peter is also very brave and a perfect fit for the role, and the Wolf is a magnificent antagonist. The grandfather also makes a good... side antagonist, shall I call it? He gives a little more perspective on Peter's life and characteristics.

Soundtrack:

It's the classic Sergei Prokofiev score. Absolutely fantastic and enjoyable through and through. I really don't have any criticism for this soundtrack. It's beautiful, and fits well due to the fact that the movie was mostly created by simply following the soundtrack. What's not to love?

Visuals:

Charming beyond belief. Seeing how this film is also stop motion seems to add even more to the entire experience. The fur looks real, the environments look real, everything just looks great. The movements flow very nicely, there's no major flaws in any of the visuals. The color scheme of the movie also fits very well, keeping a very dark tone but so much so that the movie becomes depressing. The lighting is fantastic, and gives each shot a perfect feel to it. It adds drama, expresses anger, and portrays happiness very well (when the film is actually upbeat, that is). The character designs are also flawless, and make sense for their setting and roles

Overall Opinion:

By god I love this short film. Now, I also adore the Disney version from Make Mine Music in 1946, but man this one is incredible. I remember seeing it back when it was first released, actually, and even loving it back then. I'm so glad this version was created. It was definitely production money well spent, and time well spent while watching it. I would say to watch it at least once, because it's an awesome movie (and the payoff at the end is lovely)!

Alice in Wonderland, Directed by Tim Burton (2010)

Hey guys, new admin 5 here. Hope you enjoy my first review!

Summary: Alice is an intelligent, creative girl who is raised in a society that expects women to stay in dresses and behave like young ladies. When she falls into the rabbit hole out of curiosity of a rabbit in a waist coat, her views of life are turned upside down. In Wonderland, she meets quirky characters that help her pursue her written destiny of bringing the Red Queen down and getting Wonderland out of her iron grip.

Starring: Mia Wasikowska (Alice), Johnny Depp (Mad Hatter), Helena Bonham Carter (Red Queen), Anne Hathaway (White Queen),Stephen Fry (Voice of Cheshire Cat)

Acting: For a cast of grown adults acting in a whimsical movie, they all did a good job. Mia Wasikowska was impressive, but to be honest it didn’t seem like she had the same kind of enthusiasm as the other actors did. In a way, she looked bored. Her accent also felt out of place when mixed in with the other actors. Johnny Depp was the complete opposite. The Mad Hatter was a wonderful role for him to play, especially because he didn’t take the crazy aspect of the character over the edge.Each character had their own personality, and besides the few flaws that Mia Wasikowska had, each actor/actress was able to put a bit of themselves into them along with staying true to the character.

Special Effects: This movie was filled with computer animations, and the animators did the story justice. The whole setting had a bit of a dark feel to it, and that gave it a “Tim Burton” feel.The special effects were really what separated it from the old, cartoony and light hearted version of the tale.

Music: The music really put the tone for the movie, and it helped with the dark aspect of Tim Burton into it. The problem was that it helped the movie be a bit anticlimactic. Music is supposed to raise suspense. For this movie, the music didn’t come up to par with the rest of the movie. With certain scenes, the fight scene for example, the music should’ve been louder and it should’ve enhanced the fact that it was a very important scene in the film.

Personal Opinion: This movie was right up my alley with how colorful and mystical it was. Other than Mia Wasikowska’s expressionless acting and some of the music, it was very enjoyable for me. The, for lack of a better word, cuteness of Disney and the dark twisted mind of Tim Burton worked in harmony in it. It’s not just a “the princess gets the prince” kind of movie. The ending gave off a “girls can go off on their own and be independent” message, which is a large reason why I liked it other than the characters.

The Princess Bride (1987) as directed by Rob Reiner

And so, Admin 2 gets another chance to gush about a film she loves!

Summary:

A sick young boy is told a story by his grandfather, and this story consists of a stereotypical love story, but it also contains sword fights, shrieking eels, rodents of unusual size, a pompous prince, a man with 6 fingers, a giant, pirates, a beautiful princess, and lots of kissing (much to the boy’s dismay).

I won’t actually be able to say too much about this film without it just being a regurgitation of what every other person who has seen this movie has said, but I’ll do what I can without just sounding like a broken record.

Characters:

Each one is charismatic and extremely memorable. They all have such entertaining interactions that it just makes them even more lovable characters. Their witty comebacks and actions just make things even better. The acting is superb, not a single line comes off as forced, nor do their deliveries fall flat. Every actor fits their character perfectly, and not a single character feels out of place. Perfect casting for a practically perfect film.

Plot:

The entire thing flows well and keeps you interested the entire time. It’s a stereotypical love story with some bits of action for the boys, but it’s handled with such grace and such a light-hearted tone that it fits just about any audience. It’s well paced, it keeps things focused, and it keeps you engrossed the entire time. Since this is a comedy, though, it’s not really story based. It’s all about making the audience laugh while taking them on an adventure. This movie succeeds in doing so. The jokes are wonderful. The situations are perfect. There’s really nothing I can complain about with this film’s story, especially since it’s so humor driven. This film’s witty banter kills me. It’s the absolute best.

Music:

Nothing incredible, but it definitely fits the tone of the movie, and adds to the mood quite well.

Personal Opinion:

There’s really nothing I can say about this film that hasn’t already been said. Any age group can watch it, and enjoy it to the fullest. Heck, I didn’t even know it was a comedy for most of my life because I enjoyed the romance aspect of it so much (and because as a child, I only cared for romance)! Every joke just makes me laugh out loud. This movie is incredible. Many revere it as being the perfect movie, and I whole-heartedly agree. This movie is a must see, no matter what age you may be. It’s over dramatic, it’s playful, it’s witty, and all in all it’s just a great film.

Also, go on the IMDB page for this film, and read the trivia. Some of it is just absolutely hilarious. It definitely makes the rodents of unusual size much less terrifying if you tell your child that there are actually men in the suits, and in one scene their mask begins to come off and they have to pull it back on in the middle of the fight. (If you couldn’t tell, those things used to scare me half to death)

Admin 3 is gonna go see The Conjuring today!

Although I may or may not do a review of it since I'd rather leave the horror genre to momijichan, I'm really excited to see it. I heard it was super scary and I love me some good scarin'.

Btw great job on the reviews so far guys! Reading the other ones gave me good ideas on how to improve my own reviews in the future ^u^ keep up the good work!
