Saw The Muppet Show special on Disney Plus today. After so many attempts to revive this franchise I can honestly say after seeing this one... They nailed it, they really nailed it. They did an amazing job of recreating the energy of the original show, it doesn't feel like they missed a beat.
Outside of a brief montage during the beginning (and the return of Muppet Labs and Muppet News (which surprisingly may be the funniest bit in the whole thing)) there isn't much focus on nostalgic throwbacks or even this being a "Special Event" (outside of Kermit's "We may be starting again depending on how tonight goes"). It feels very much like an episode of The Muppet Show that just happened to be made in 2026. Honestly what made me freak out the most as a Muppet fan was the various cameos from obscure or lesser seen Muppets sprinkled throughout (Hilda even gets a line of dialogue for the first time in nearly 50 years!).
There's also attempts to experiment with the Muppets, having them cover music genres and parody stuff that they haven't in the past. More than just recapturing nostalgia, it recaptures the joy felt when watching the show, seeing these bunch of frogs, dogs, pigs, and whatevers attempt to put on a show, only to constantly fumble and end in explosions.
Definitely give this a watch.
