Patti + Melinda Wedding Trailer
Kinda Similar?
When you use really good stock music--a lot--this is bound to happen.
Almost a year ago, I filmed and edited a short piece called “Milk River”. I used a piece of music from musicbed.com--paid for the appropriate license, yadda, yadda.
Today, my colleague, @ryanblaskephotography mentioned that the latest trailer from @themusicbed, “Make” reminded him of my Milk River piece. Not just the same music--which is bound to happen when you use stock, right?--but he also pointed out that some of the edits, pacing, and transition styles were eerily similar too. Specifically the double-exposure/composite transitions mixed with speed ramping. Check out these screen-grabs.

And, watch both pieces, if you will.

Do I have a patent on double-exposure/composite speed-ramping transitions? (if that’s even a thing) Nope. There’s nothing new under the sun, and God knows I didn’t create the sun. So I’m not the first editor to use this style--although I like to think someday I might develop a style into something a little more unexpected; but not yet.
Am I suggesting the @themusicbed filmmakers saw my Milk River video and used it as a style guide or reference for their edit? Nope. Not really. The ego-maniac inside me wants to think they did--because that would be really flattering. But the realist inside me says, “Get over yourself, Cody. No one at musicbed.com has ever seen ANY of your videos.”
But, I DO however, see the similarities. And I like it, I think. Great minds, and all that, i guess.
But what do you think?

People ask all the time how and where we license our music. Here's how and where! TheMusicBed is definitely one of our top choices when it comes to music licensing, they have so much variety and keep stepping it up constantly with new artists, custom playlists and now guided live chat! Finding the right song is definitely a process, but when you find it it's so rewarding. Here's our latest teaser we put together with a MusicBed song, cut it up just right to fit the short and sweet teaser we were looking for. LOVE how the visuals were able to match perfectly with the audio, that's how you know you have a winner :D
