i’m losing my mind
Thunderblink And #19!!😁❤️
Mariah Carey’s voice echoed through the apartment, accented with big red bows, tinsel over the doorways, twinkling fairy lights around the living room ceiling and a barren tree sitting in the corner. Boxes of recently bought dollar store ornaments sat open and waiting to be added on the low coffee table.
“Really, Caitlin, this is…a lot,” John said, though he meant it as a compliment, as if all of this was too much. It was too much to take a moment to cherish those around and focus on himself for a little while.
Caitlin waved a hand wrapped around a cheap plastic wine glass. “It’s the least that could be done. We can’t exactly visit our family so…” She waved the glass around the room at the rest of their small crew. “Here we are.”
Clarice appeared at John’s side, sliding under his arm and wrapping her own around his back. “It’s great. I was never really a Christmas person but you may have changed my mind,” she said with a smile at the other woman.
“Are we just gonna stand around, or are we gonna decorate this thing?” Marcos asked, holding up a box of ornaments.
Soon, the small area around the artificial tree was overcrowded, as everyone dug in and looped ornaments over stiff wire limbs. Lauren crouched to get the lower branches, Reed circled around to put some on the back just because, Caitlin held the box out until it was empty and replaced it with a full one, John stretched toward the top and Marcos and Clarice hung around the middle.
Finally, after many renditions of the same few Christmas songs sung by different artists, the tree was stuffed full of orbs of all colors.
“I think it looks fantastic,” Caitlin said, standing back amid all the empty plastic boxes that would have to be stored somewhere. Maybe Marcos could take them.
Clarice put her hands on her hips and arched an eyebrow. “It’s…something.” Everyone gave a good hearted chuckle at her words.
Reed and Caitlin settled into the couch and Marcos and Lauren started picking up boxes.
“Hey, what’s this?” Lauren lifted an unopened box that had ended up under the table. She pried open the top. Inside lay the crowning jewel: a golden star. It was obviously cheap and not quite the hand carved Santa Clause that sat at the top of the tree back in Atlanta before their lives changed forever, but it was sweet. She held it up.
“I’ll get that,” John said, taking it from her hands. Clarice joined him at the tree.
“Where do you think it should go?” she teased. “The top?”
He glanced down at her with a smirk. “Was thinking about it, yeah.”
She grinned, anchoring herself with a hand on his arm and another on his abdomen so she could lean and kiss his cheek, pausing his reach to the top. He shook his head a little and raised the plastic star a little higher before she kissed him again, ducking under his arm this time and getting the corner of his lips.
“Do you want me to put this up there or not?”
“I’m not doing anything,” Clarice said innocently, though she did wait a few extra seconds for him to actually put the star on the top branch before she swooped in for a full kiss.
He kissed her in return, maybe a little too enthusiastically before remembering where they were. Stepping back, he gave a nod and slid his arm around her shoulders. “I think it looks great.”
“It does!” Caitlin said from behind them.
Seconds later, Marcos plugged in the lights and the multicolored bulbs shone off the cheap baubles like a hundred mini-disco balls.
