Summary: Shikadai gets his parents a wedding anniversary present.
Set sometime during Shikadai’s academy years.
It has been raining all day. The soft sounds of raindrops falling onto the roof of the Nara house created a calming atmosphere. The trees are shaking, the tall, leafy plants swaying forcibly to the rhythm set by the falling droplets. It never ends, does it? This is the annual raining season, after all.
But it is nice and cool, as well as dry in the comforts of the house. The fan is blowing a gentle breeze, perpetuating the feeling of coldness.
Sitting alone in one of the many rooms in the grand Nara home, is the destined heir of the clan, Nara Shikadai. He was a genius like his father and prodigy like his mother. He had the skills of an extraordinary Shinobi even at an unripe age of 10. Simply said, Shikadai had the quality of a exceptional successor to the Nara clan.
However, he was facing a tough problem. He had spent nearly 2 hours trying to find a solution but to no avail. He scratched his forehead in frustration as he cancelled off yet another item on his list that he thought could be the answer to his current dilemma. Shikadai slumped back into his chair and stared at the ceiling.
He had only another 2 days before his parents wedding anniversary to find them a present. He regretted putting it off for such a long time when he could’ve thought about what to get them weeks ago.
There was no use in regretting anything. Right now, he had to focus on the situation he was in.
Think, Shikadai. Think...
Last year, he had gotten his parents a pricey air freshener and a box of dark chocolates which his parents were delighted to receive. Temari has expressed that the air freshener was perfect to be sprayed around the house while his father made a rather gross and shameless comment: “This can help set up the mood for tonight. Thanks Shikadai”.
Thinking about it made Shikadai grimace in disgust. When it came to all the mushy stuff, his dad was even more blunt that his mom. Or perhaps, his dad was doing it on purpose just to mess with him, which was a more logical reasoning.
Therefore, this year, Shikadai is determined to get them something that would be gross-comments-proof. The first that came to mind was a book. But, then he remembered that his parents could easily get any book from the vast state-of-the-art Nara library. So getting them a book would seem unnecessary.
The next thing that he considered to get them was a pair of pyjamas each. But the idea of it left as soon as it came when he predicted his father’s response.
“Pyjamas? We wouldn’t be needing them very much, son.”
He’ll save himself from the prospect of hearing those disgusting words.
Shikadai thought further. What else could he get for them? His brows drew together as he cracked his brains for better gifts. He looked around his room for ideas. His eyes landed on the mug on his bedside table.
Getting mug would be perfect. He will buy a mug for each of them with different customed designs. Shikadai could think of nothing that his father would say if he gets them mugs. Mugs were normal day-to-day items that were both pretty and useful all the same. This was the perfect gift that he was looking for!
“Can’t you do it quicker?” Shikadai asked the shopkeeper desperately. “I need it by Wednesday.”
The young shopkeeper shook her head. “Sorry. Designing a mug would take at least 3 days.” She told him.
“Um... why don’t you consider buying our ready-made mugs.” The shopkeeper asked him nicely.
“No thank you.” He bowed his head slightly and thanked the shopkeeper. He’ll just have to find another shop.
The rain was still pouring heavily. Shikadai felt more and more uncomfortable in his wet clothes as he walked through the streets of Konoha, still unsuccessful in finding a gift shop.
That’s it. I give up! I’ll just get them the pyjamas.
He sighed in defeat. He wanted to return to the warmth of his home. Pyjamas can be easily found in the hypermarket near the academy. He will buy them tomorrow after school with Boruto. Now, he just wanted to go home.
As he walked down a row of shops in the direction of home, something caught his attention. Shikadai stopped abruptly and stared at the item that was being displayed in that shop. He ran across the street to get a better look.
The picture frame had a beautiful design; the frame was carved in the shape of deer antlers and miniature deers bordered the frame. It was perfect.
Shikadai purchased the frame for an affordable and reasonable price. He felt really happy with his choice. He knew that his parents would love it. All that was left was to put a nice picture in the frame.
Time to pay Grandma Yoshino a visit then.
A/N: This one’s rather short. Thank you to @thena0315 for the request. I hope you enjoyed reading this. Btw, I heard that in the recently released Shikamaru Shinden that Shikamaru forgot about his anniversary and Temari was super pissed. I need more than that! Someone translate it for me!
