Crazy that my niece is going to grow up and have that jingle mean nothing to her... #TheNerdTruth #Repost @petesbasement • • • It feels weird to eulogize a toy store, but when I think of all the fun times I had growing up when my mom would take me to #ToysRUs, it’s hard to believe my nieces and nephew won’t get to experience that same level of awe and excitement of seeing aisle after aisle filled with toys. “From bikes to trains to video games...” Always kinda’ bugged me that they never mentioned action figures, which was always my first and foremost thought when I went to Toys R Us. I wasn’t old enough to go shopping with my mother for He-Man or Transformers. I think the first toy line I can really remember sifting through the shelves for myself was GI Joe. The figures were about $3-4 then, and I would scour each and every row of them looking for which ones I wanted most. Then came Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. And finally Nintendo. I can still remember having Ace Duck in my hands and then seeing that little yellow paper, indicative of a video game in stock, for Super C (Contra 2, for the uninformed) I begged my mother to “loan” me the money, promising to do extra chores for two weeks if she’d get me the game. She was refusing. And then something happened that I have never forgotten to this day. A little kid - I was about 12..? This kid was maybe 4. He sees the figure of Ace Duck in my hand and yells “DUCKY!!” and snatched it out of my hand with the full gamut of excitement of a kid who just got his life’s desire fulfilled. The mother apologized profusely and told him to give it back to me, which I promptly refused, citing there were plenty more on the shelves if I wanted one (there weren’t, by the way) She thanked me and walked away; the kid was thrilled to have his toy. My mom, seeing this, bought me the game. I guess she was proud of me for that. It’s that kid’s excitement that I think of when I think of Toys R Us. I really can’t believe it’s closing. I know in its waning years the stock on the shelves was never what it was back in the day, but that’s not what I’ll choose to remem
