he's real defense of FromSoft games to be sure, and he thinks they're special and different compared to most 'poorly designed' action games where the difficulty is artificial and you CAN just change it by fucking w/numbers

In his defense, he was supportive when I played Bloodbourne with him up to the first boss (and apparently I did very well) but it wasn't a fun experience for me and I haven't touched it since bc it's EXHAUSTING
yea the fromsoft games look like the antithesis of fun to me. i get wanting a challenge, but the challenge those games offer do nothing for me.
sure, there are action games that make themselves harder by just increasing damage/enemy health which is a lazy way of boosting difficulty, but the problem is that doing the opposite, decreasing enemy damage and health, isnt really equivalently lazy. that’s actually a good, quick way of decreasing difficulty.
there are games that handle it differently. platinum tends to completely change enemy placement on harder and easier difficulties. for harder difficulties, they will put late game enemies at the very beginning of the game in weird formations youve never seen playing the game before. for easier difficulties, they will make sure that those harder enemies appear WAY later.
not only that, but they offer other things to keep the experience fun, but also make it easier (like in wonderful 101, i think you get infinite energy on easier difficulties so you are always forming the most damaging weapons). they also make sure to give you customization options that so you can choose how you experience the game (like auto dodges/parries).
my point is, if fromsoft is really the incredible action developer that everyone praises them for, then they should be up to the task of adjusting the difficulty of their games if they so wanted to.
its just weird that gamers will be like “fromsoft games HAVE to be this way because otherwise the games just wouldnt be the same” even though other top tier action games developers have figured out multiple ways to make their games way more accessible to people.

seriously, the difficulty modulator for spider man literally just adjusts the amount of damage enemies do to you/how many hits they take before going down. it's barely an adjusted line of code and it makes a huge difference for accessibility for a lot of players, ESPECIALLY in story games. I have seen better difficulty modules, but base value? Thats ALL YOU GOTTA DO, FAM
yea pretty much. celeste, which is known for being hard as hell, also has a bunch of accessibility options that make it easier for more people to get through the game and experience it.
donkey kong tropical freeze, a notoriously difficult game, also added a new character that has way more abilities and health than the others so more people could enjoy it.
its not this ultra gargantuan task that a lot of gamers make it out to be.
gamers are just entitled.
