I was genuinely heartbroken watching the movie because. I was So Excited. And then they tried to condense the first five books into an hour and thirty minutes and it just Did Not Work. They may be "kids books" but the plot had enough depth that each book could have been a 1 hour+ movie.

Completely agreed! And yes, though I can't remember if I read the last book or not. I had a fixation on the books I was able to read though, and I remember roleplaying with friends at recess as owls and wolves.
I was so determined to learn how to draw owls in elementary school, it was probably the inspiration for a lot of my art as a kid, which makes it a bit surprising that I don't really draw animals much anymore.
