Exclaim Books (a division of tNY Press, formerly theNewerYork) is a publisher of experimental fiction of all shapes and sizes, combining words and images to generate a gestalt which is challenges the reader to examine the interplay of art and literature in new and exciting ways.

One of their latest publications is Sharpen, a collection of short pieces by author Rich Ives. Each chapter (most of which are a page or less in length) is illustrated with pen and ink drawings by Jack Callil, with additional diagrams by designer Nils Davey. The cumulative effect for the reader is a mix of familiarity and confusion; as Exclaim Books describes on their website:

Surprisingly hefty and substantial feeling, Sharpen is sure to please literature lovers and design aficionados alike!

Wow, it's been seven months since I last posted here.

I'm sorry.

I'm sorry to all the contributors whose work has been in limbo for so long. I'm sorry to all the readers, who have been waiting to read the work. I'm sorry that I haven't been transparent about what's been happening with the project over this period.

Essentially what's been happening is nothing. I was in touch with a few different designers about working on the project. They all seemed interested but ended up being too busy to commit to it, or pulling out after telling me that they would work on it. This was demoralising and held things up a lot.

Because I have such a strong vision of what I want LEFT to be and don't want to compromise that, I've only approached designers whose work has been an inspiration or influence on that vision. It would have been easy to find someone to do it if I didn't want it done a certain way. Luckily, I have finally found the people who can make this happen.

Last week I signed a contract with tNY Creative to design LEFT. These are the people who design theNewerYork (which I mentioned being an influence on LEFT in this blog post). Their work is consistently beautiful and I'm excited to be working with them. So far they have been extremely professional which makes me feel both safe and scared.

Since things are finally moving forward again, expect more posts and announcements soon. I'm really looking forward to sharing the full list of contributors soon.

A Note From Josh Raab (editor) on changing the world through literature:

My dream is to change the world using creative writing. I don't consider it hyperbolic, though I can understand that it's hard to see from the outside how a little book of stories and art could do this. It's been done before. From religious texts to lawmaking, writing alters the world around us and the work we choose to read alters how we see that world. In the words of the poet John Mark: "All love poetry is anti-war poetry." Expounding upon this, I believe all writing, whether explicitly or not, is political. If done correctly, if appreciated wholly, a reader should close the book and see the world anew, see new possibilities, experience nuances of compassion previously overlooked. 

theNewerYork has grown from a little book I made in my room 4 years ago to a worldwide experiment in literary publishing. From group collaboration to bizarro literary events to movies and art and advocacy, our fictional city gains new citizens and dimensions everyday.
