The OA is a story that focuses intensely on whatvthe relationship is between darkness and light and what it means to be “good” or “evil.” When the protagonist, Nina Avarova, is a young girl, she comforts a small snake, whispering to it:

“I hear your heart beating. Don't be afraid. I know you are a good snake.”
