"Khatun
The OA presents Khatun as an amalgamation of different traditions: She sits in the middle of floating galaxies, which calls to mind the nephilim in biblical mythology. The name “Khatun” is Arabic, she wears parts of what appear to be Saris, and the braille markings on her face are in German. According to one Reddit user, the braille translates to angel and shepherd.
Angel, of course, corresponds to Prairie’s self-appointed title as the OA, or Original Angel.
When Prairie meets Khatun again in the fourth episode, she’s living in a hut, which also evokes the Baba Yaga, a crone from Russian folklore. Khatun’s mild-mannered demeanor clashes with the Baba Yaga’s harsh personality, but curiously, some legends say she is the Devil’s grandmother. Recall that Prairie presents her father as a man who works in mining, is intwined in the Russian criminal underworld, and is determined to beat the cold. These are all rather devilish qualities. Further, Prairie often wears a sweatshirt with a wolf on it, which represents the Slavic god of the underworld, otherwise known as the devil.

Fun Fact 7
You know who is not only a badass woman, but a badass woman that we don’t hear enough about?
Sorghaghtani Beki.
Motherfucking Sorghaghtani Beki is my current historical girl crush; the wife of Genghis Kahn’s youngest son Tolui and mother of Kublai Khan, she was born a princess in her own right, but man oh man, would she become a power in her own right.
When Tolui died, she refused to remarry, and so, in Mongol tradition, retained the right to rule in her husband’s stead. She advised her brother-in-law, Ögedei Khan, and eventually manoeuvred all four of her sons into leaders of men in their own right, the most famous of which being Kublai Khan, who conquered China into the Mongol Empire and founded the Yuan dynasty of the Middle Kingdom.
Mongol women had far more rights and power than most of their contemporaries, but Sorghaghtani (Beki is a title) really went above and beyond. Look her up, it’s worth it, I can’t even fit all of it here right now, I’m too busy fangirling.
“If I was to see among the race of women another woman like this, I should say the race of women is far superior to that of men.” - Bar Hebraeus, Syriac scholar and writer (1226-1286)
GUH, rewatching The Long Ballad and having lots of thoughts about the Khatun and her loyal bodyguard, and how they're such interesting dark parallels to Li Leyan and Hao Du.
What if Leyan did end up getting married off to the Ashile tribe, with only some maidservants and a bodyguard from home, and an uncaring uncle as emperor? What kind of a person would she have matured into, abandoned by her people - would she have been able to gain her confidence like in the show, or become embittered and manipulative instead? What kind of a husband would She'er have been to her, with his inferiority complex, at the whims of other people's power plays - or would he have been inspired to be better? What kind of place in the Ashile would Hao Du have taken, ever his princess's loyal servant, with vicious impulses a little less checked? Would the Khatun see this little princess as a mirror of her former self and feel compelled to protect her, or as a pawn to bend to her will in service of restoring the Sui?
I'm super interested in this AU but I have no idea where it would go. If anyone has written or ends up writing it, I'd really love to read it!
I couldn’t tell if I was inside the Earth or above it. Why was the dark so dazzling?
