For God, then, there can be no condemnation of a sinner out of a naked justice that prescinds from his love but only a self-condemnation of the sinner who refuses to acknowledge the rectitude of the divine love in the judgment of the redeemer Jesus Christ. What God's love does with such a person is his secret; it does not divulge to us under what terms of what unimaginable judgments it might undertake to rescue him.
Hans Urs Von Balthasar, Theologic II, p. 143
