Louisville Seminary is one of 10 theological schools of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). In addition, the United Methodist denomination officially recognizes the Seminary as an appropriate school for its candidates to receive their theological education. Undergraduate Theological Studies at the John Leland Center

Led by president Dr. Mark Olson, the John Leland Center of Theological Studies provides a wide array of academic services to individuals preparing for a life in global ministry. Dr. Mark Olson and the John Leland Center cater to both individuals seeking a diploma in theology and graduate students pursuing master’s degrees in various areas of theology. The center’s undergraduate program in theology provides a wealth of general theological information, making it a viable option for individuals wishing to learn more about their faith, as well as in depth support and guidance for ministry candidates. Students, who must possess at least a high school degree, meet for three hours per week for four months as they work towards their diploma. Students enrolled in the theology diploma program study the Old Testament and New Testament, while also analyzing the Bible as a complete text and learning how to synthesize specific passages for preaching and teaching purposes. A distinguished tradition in theology, however, insists that this arbitrary basis is the only one available. This point of view is called fideism. Proposed and energetically defended by some of the major thinkers of Christianity and Islam, fideism found its most passionate modern proponent in the Danish existentialist Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855), and it remains a common stance among scholars and ordinary believers alike. Fideism argues that the rules of reason don’t apply to religion because the subject matter of religion is a realm above reason. The god of classical monotheism, who is the usual subject of fideist arguments, is defined in terms which arguably make no sense to the human mind. Logical positivists use considerations of this sort to argue that the concept of the god of monotheism is incoherent, and that the god himself therefore does not exist. Fideists, on the other hand, argue that the terms of the definition are correct, and the inability of the human mind to make sense of them is simply what happens when a finite being tries to comprehend an infinite one.
