YOU FANTASISE ABOUT SUCCESS.  you fantasise about coming out on top and being respected for it.  you fantasise about achieving something for the greater good  -  about  winning at something and making the lives of other people better  .  .  .    but deep down,  maybe  just  maybe,  you do fatasise about her.   it’s so rare that you get to meet another person who shares your values and your habits  -  even if some of those habits are bad and need rectifying.  even your ex wife didn’t understand those parts of you  -  even tina couldn’t relate to your constant need to push yourself to do better.  but bea does,  doesn’t she?  she’s just like you.  she reminds you of a younger version of yourself,  working harder and harder and harder until she burns out.  you can respect that.  you can appreciate that.  

❛     i’m not sure i should answer that.    ❜     because you’re colleagues and you want to remain professional.  but it’s hard when faced with the overwhelming presence of lust.  you cannot deny the chemistry.  when you look at bea,  you see the perfect version of a person.  you see everything that you have worked so hard for over the past decade.  and now you’re sat with her in your home, wine in hand, already passing the boundaries of professionalism.  you have to get out of your head.  you have to start living.  ❛    if i was to say yes   -   not that i am saying yes  -  how would that make you feel?    ❜  christ,  you need to be more straight forward.  get your head out of your fucking ass, bette porter.  open yourself up.

This sector is made for hiding; a universe within itself built for deception and shadow. It suits him now, considering the prize kept close to his chest. Suit shifted for something far less conspicuous among the low light of the bear, jacket heavy and jeans dark and faded. (How long has it been since he wore either? He doesn’t know and isn’t sure he’s ready to remember.)

Credits shift in his fingers; a scant few. But hopefully good. Rule one of hiding out: blending in was critical, and being the only patron in the bar without a drink?

Why ask for that kind of scrutiny?

He slides into an empty seat. Carefully placing his credits on the surprisingly clean counter. “You take these?”

“hey, sorry i’m late - had to pick maeve up from school.” foggy rushes into his own office, daughter in tow, and tosses his briefcase onto his desk. “make yourself comfortable, i’ll only be a second.” he sheds his coat and seats himself at his desk, while maeve parks herself in the corner at a small table she’d set up to do her homework. “pretend i’m not here!” she grins and waves.

❛  i’ve got one just for you  –––  ❜   his fingers pick at the chords expertly, shoulders moving along to the sound he’s making, caught up in the music. benoit blanc seems as relaxed as ever; he could hardly be mistaken for the placid, three-piece suit wearing investigator he was during a case. even his voice sounds lighter as he sings; it has little to do with the notes and all to do with the company he keeps.  ❛  oh baby baby how was i supposed to know... that something wasn’t riiiiight.  ❜
