FAXE in THE LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS is much like The Oracle of Delphi. Delphi was a fortune teller, and Faxe’s territory and fortunetelling, reminds me of the time I visited The Oracle of Delphi in Athens. Like the magic 8 ball, Ai met with Faxe and asked him whether or not Gethen will join the Ekumen in five years. Ai replied, yes. Fortunetelling is an idea that adds richness to any story. To fortune tell is to give answers. However, one can question whether the answers should be trusted. If one’s fate can change, can’t one’s fortune? I am hesitant to believe fortunes wholeheartedly, but the theme of fortunetelling is a powerful one. It is eerie and mysterious, which makes perfect sense in the story Le Guin has written.
