032: The Orca pt.1

The ad was listed online, under "Subletting single room in thirteen and a half bedroom house. All utilities in. Pet friendly. $325/month." That's what caught Carlos' attention, that last bit. $325 a month for all utilities included? And pet friendly? And it's downtown? Hell yeah! Carlos had immediately responded, sending an email through the list sites messaging service, signing it "Your Future Roomie, Carlos".

He figured the thirteen and a half was a joke, but then he had his first viewing of The Orca. A colossal house, taking up an entire block, it must have originally been five or six houses connecting together. Coupling, parallel walls were joined with bridges, sometimes even rooms built between them over open space. In places extra floors were added, in others, haphazard balconies.

And yet inside, three hundred years of contrasting architecture blended together, and the occupants were just as ecclectic. From an old man on dialysis to pro ping pong playing naturist perpetually in the buff, Carlos was continually baffled as he was led to the room for rent. He'd need a map to find it, but with a grin, he said "When can I move in?"
