EVEN PATRICK BATEMAN KNOWS IT'S WRONG TO RP AS HITLER
things i have done:
followed a lot of orphan black blogs on my main rp blog ( callmeselina )
worked out v hard ( hell yeah! )
locked myself out of my place for about an hour with nothing on but a towel in the cold
I am working on a blog for my English class where I have chosen to "become" Patrick Bateman, could you please check it out and maybe give me some pointers/let me know what you think? My blog needs to be completed by April 9
(All these people with these American Psycho projects be poppin' out the damn woodwork)
So, this blog is AWESOME. (Naturally I support the frequent usage of my posts in it). You've obviously read the book, and you obviously know what you're talking about. There are only a handful of things that I think you might be able to improve upon (and of course this is just my opinion.)
I don't know how intense you want this blog to be, or if there are any limits of how gory/violent it can be, but one thing which I think is very telling about Patrick is how in the book he tells long stories about how he tortures and kills women, but all in the same conversational tone in which he talks about his brunch with his buddies or what he saw on the Patty Winters Show that morning. It kind of creates this whoa, what? moment for the reader to read something shockingly violent, but to Patrick it's just another daily event. So I think if you would feel comfortable doing so, thinking about adding a few Bateman murder stories might bring your blog even closer to the book.
Patrick's speech patterns are almost awkwardly perfect. (Speech patterns are truly one of the most difficult things to roleplay or copy -- I've spent ungodly amounts of time combing through the book to try to come up with the right wording for my own roleplay segments, and I'll be the first to admit they're certainly not perfect). He kind of sounds like he's writing a formal essay all the time. It's almost like when he was growing up he didn't know how to effectively communicate with people, and over the years he had to manually teach himself how to speak, react, and interact with people. This is actually possible considering he's a psychopath, although that's wide open for interpretation (on a side note, it's often the same for people with Aspergers, and personally knowing people with Aspergers, I've noticed some similarities between the way Patrick speaks and the way a well-adjusted person with Aspergers speaks -- plus a wildly inflated ego and sadistic tendencies, of course). His grammar is always good, and even when he's flustered, he manages to speak in a very controlled manner. See "Confronted by Faggot":
"...I know you feel the same way I do." Dramatically, [Luis] whips off his sunglasses, as if to prove a point."You have reached… an inaccurate conclusion," I choke. "You are… obviously unsound."
Scanning the book to check for the way Patrick phrases his words can be time-consuming and brain-meltingly boring, but it's a good way to ensure you sound as authentic as possible :)
I think you're doing absolutely fantastic, and I hope you get a well-deserved good grade for your project. If you haven't already, you could also try messaging thepatrickbateman, who is an absolute genius when it comes to impersonating Patrick, and they might be able to give you some tips and tricks OOC. Seriously, this project is awesome.
