Dahlia ‘My Love’. This is a semi-cactus Dahlia, meaning that the petals are rolled up like those of cactus Dahlias, but not completely so.
It’s good to remember that a Dahlia, like most members of the Asteraceae family, is a composite flower, which is an inflorescence made up of many smaller flowers, or florets, and each large petal belongs to one of those. So there’s no one central stigma/stamens etc. but lots of smaller ones, each theoretically capable of producing a seed, much like a sunflower head.
This is the first of my Dahlias to bloom this year, coinciding with the first day of summer, which is nice. Happy solstice to all. ❂
