Costume History Cameos: Theposterofagirl
Being a Costume Designer and lover of Fashion History, it’s super difficult for me to pin down just one period, region, or figure I love, had I been asked prior to my senior year of college I’d tell you the “New Look” period that followed WWII in the 1950’s was way up there, part of me will never get over how the new look embraced certain aspects of “traditional” femininity and how it was such a reversal from the somewhat more austere WWII fashions
BUT, when researching for a design of Three Sisters I fell in love with the fashions of the 1900’s-1910’s. I looked at a wide range because the director wasn’t looking for something locked into a certain period. something about the attention to detail, the material and intricate lace and beading on evening gowns and the idea of dressing formally for dinner I just loved and sort of attached to. Aside from evening looks the daytime looks were just elegant and there seemed to be a real purpose to every motif and color choice and every action of dressing was Deliberate and it was just so beautiful. (around the time that I started designing the show I also fell in love with Downton Abbey so that might have had something to do with it too )
1910-1914
1913
Awesome! It's neat how the New Look and the Edwardian Styles are kind of on either end of a more austere, war-ridden couple of decades. And by the time it came around, the New Look was indeed, very new! It really astounds me sometimes that the fashions of the first decade of the century were popular within 100 years of when I was born (and if you want to compare fashion of the 1990s with fashion at this time and the previous decade, there is an interesting discussion! But at first glance, anyway, the evolution of Western fashion during the 20th Century is arguably the most dramatic and fast paced in history!)
