Catey Shaw Debuts Single and Music Video: The Ransom !
I have been following Catey Shaw since her appearance at this past summer’s Asbury Park Pride. However, most recently, the last time I interviewed the “The Ransom” singer was this past Aug. at her low key, home show at Williamsburg’s own, Baby’s All Right.
Shaw is on her very first tour, touring North America, also including some tour dates in Canada. When I last asked her if she were coming out with an album anytime soon, she answered saying, “soon”, but that she was mostly putting out singles. Since then, our musical Brooklyn girl has released “Rumble in the Park”, “Walks All Over You”, and “Tell Everyone”. Well, it looks like she certainly did release “mostly singles”!
Having now moved to LA, the 24-year-old has premiered the highly anticipated single and music video for “The Ransom” on Popular TV this Friday, Jan.15. With some glorious saxophone, and 80′s beats, chimes, and synths, my attention was more than held ransom by the most fun and innovative pop-artist.
In Shaw’s interview with Popular TV, she spoke thoroughly about her past music, especially with her latest The Brooklyn EP. Outside Baby’s All Right that one summer night, I had the pleasure of listening to the outgoing artist share similar topics. As stated in Popular TV, Shaw mentions the amount of cyberbullying she went through in the release of her single’s-- “Brooklyn Girls”-- music video. In regards to the negative press she received, I remember asking her what it was like to feel such negativity and she simply replied saying the song is suppose to be about her attraction to Brooklyn girls. As simple as that.
As I attempted to write under the rainy sky, keeping the black ink of my pen from smudging into my notebook, I recall smiling to her response since I had watched “Brooklyn Girls” video before I went to the show. I loved the simplicity--I loved that Catey Shaw’s art was based off her heart, maybe the butterflies she got around the Brooklyn girls she surrounded herself with.
When asked by Popular TV if Shaw still thought Brooklyn girls ruled the world, she said, “I still stand behind all of it. The actual Brooklyn girls that have been there forever, they hear the song (”Brooklyn Girls”), and it’s true shit. They are badass, and they have a true thing you don’t see in other places. Because I’m not from Brooklyn, I can see it. I’m from somewhere where people aren’t like that. that kind of energy and confidence those women have, I definitely still think they rule the world.”
On that note, go check out Catey Shaw’s debut music video and single, “The Ransom”! You will not be disappointed. @cateyshaw
Scott goes to festivals and brings me back gifts. First step to rebuilding my collection after loosing everything! #cartel #theransom
