Dirty Thought of the Day: Enjoy the moment.
For while I used to grow up with a saying that I've going to try and cut out of my life because I realized it is one of those unnecessary unintentional negative things that I don't need to hear anymore.
The phrase "Enjoy it while it lasts." is often used as the expression that is meant to encourage the present moment but it ironically & painfully reminds us to think about the future, often implying something sad or awful will happen.
And yes it may happen. It probably will happen. But that single phrase does NOT help. To me all it does is make the happy present moment shorter.
I think what makes it awful is because a lot of the time it comes from a source of resentment & jealously. The adults whose marriage is failing or lost their passion is now bitter at a new happy teen couple. Someone looking at a picture of a little kid helping his baby sister get to sleep and someone says "Enjoy it because eventually they'll drive you & each other crazy."
Telling me to enjoy things while reminding me about eventualities is ironic & isn't as helpful as people think it is. Just say "You should treasure this moment." or "What a happy time this."
