Well yeah it's a whole genre of power fantasy novels where you are with someone powerful and scary but they treat you well. Or maybe they don't treat you well. Whatever floats your boat!

Criminal organizations are ideal for projecting that sort of fantasy on since they don't answer to anyone else. They don't answer to the authorities or traditional notions of what a relationship should and shouldn't look like. Subordinates answer to their higher ups, but that isn't the case when you're talking about the top of the food chain. People are drawn to that sort of thing! It's not weird to acknowledge!

The thing about nuance is that it actually exists and can be expressed. Nuance is context, the other side of the argument, intentions, and circumstance. Nuance very rarely boils down to, “because I want to.” Nuance is WHY you want to. Often, when you look for the nuance to defend your argument the nuance makes your argument weaker.
