Tales From The Barber Shop.
The other day I was flying solo. Which meant I had to deal with: Appointments, booking appointments with walk-ins and the phone, handling walk-ins, taking some of the owners pre-booked appointments, and so on. With some of my clients, I have them allotted at 45 to an hour simply because I know the detail I put into their haircuts and understand the difficulty in their hair. But, what the general public doesn't understand is that not every haircut is the same and even if two people get the exact haircut it doesn't mean it'll take the same amount of time to execute said haircut. But, that doesn't stop them from making that assumption! Early in my day, I was handling one of my clients that I always have allotted at an hour and never a minute less. A person walks-in and is expecting a haircut. I offer him to come back at a certain time or he can wait. So... he opted to let go of his free time and waited, instead of getting set up with a convenient time at his convenience. The catch: I didn't tell him how long I was going to be. Sure, it's "better" if I had, but I already gave you the options to put things into your terms. Don't opt for it? Too fucking bad. You don't always get that sort of option or kindness in real life! Lightning doesn't always strike twice. As I contribute with my haircut, at which I'm about 70% in, he asks about how much time I have. I shoot him an estimate, while still speeding up my process. Since I didn't finish the haircut by his hopeful estimation, he says he has to go and leaves. To where? Obvious-fucking-ly to Yelp, that's where! As I finish up with my client, another shop patron gets stoked that the other guy left so he could get bumped up. One guy is willing to wait through a whole haircut while another makes his assumptions as to how long a haircut "should" take. After I was done, I still finished before my usual allotted time, and went on to the next one. My point? Barbers run on varied times. If you get the option to run on your time with a barber ie: make an appointment, DO IT. Because in this day and age, appointments will truly make a difference with a haircut. You get time sorted out for just you. Sure, some barbers will rush you out before the scheduled time is up, but if you got a barber that'll give you the extra 5-10 minutes it takes to make that haircut "yours," then waiting isn't such a bad thing. To top things off, later in the day I had an appointment in which I ran 10-15 minutes behind. Regardless, I took the time to listen to what he was aiming for, gave him my input, got his feedback, and gave him as he put it, "exactly what I wanted!!!" Sharing that statement several times over and looking into the mirror all around the barber shop helped solidify the fact that I can hold my own wherever my career takes me. While you can't please everyone, you'll have the ones who truly appreciate your work and will do what it takes to be your canvas... Regardless of how much free time they'll have to set aside for it.
Tales from the barber shop.
Thursday: Manned the shop solo since the owner called out. Had to deal with the phone/walk-ins/his pre-booked appointments, ON TOP of my appointments! 10:30-7:30. Friday: Opened up at 9 to get the water heater installed and service booked appointments. Rocked solo until 1, while still managing the phone/walk-ins and my appointments. 9-7:40. Both days without a lunch-break. And I typically start at 11... Back at it again at 7:30 to take care of a client, since I've got a booked morning and he couldn't do anything after 12. I don't write this because as if I'm saying I'm the hardest working barber out there -- I'm not. But I write this because this is what you do when you're a fucking adult and take the initiative to get shit done RIGHT. Whether it's barbering or any other profession, you need to get off of your ass and get shit done if you want to see progression and growth. Quit expecting handouts or anyone to help you -- rarely do people help out to genuinely see you grow, but do it to either get recognition or to get rid of your presence because the sooner you get it - the sooner you're out of their hair. There are too many people expecting shit to be done for them or expect to do the bare minimum but expect to see the biggest rewards. It doesn't work that way. Here's to everyone that works hard to earn it.

Moving Forward with the Blog.
To all the blog readers: I'm just about ready to get back on track! But, there's one thing I've considered doing which will slightly change things up a bit with the website... I'm considering changing my platform from my current Wordpress (which is my primary blog,) to my secondary blog - Tumblr. It'll be much more efficient for me to stick with just one platform (Tumblr,) as Wordpress has certain limitations cause me to not post regularly on the blog. But, I want to get some opinions from folks whether or not they think it's a good thing or a bad thing. I mean, it's more-so important that I get back into the groove of things and it's ultimately my own decision, but I do enjoy getting input from the readers. Suggestions?
