Act 2 Coming Out On Itch Tomorrow

After around 6 months of passionate development, the next piece of the puzzle finally drops tomorrow on itch.io

Act 2 (Including all Act 1 content) will have, 86k words, a few mysterious new characters to meet, and dozens of routes to explore and secrets to unravel.

It will give more questions than answers, in typical The Remainder fashion.

Pricing

Since Act 3 will be the conclusion of the saga, we will price Act 2 as the full game at $20. Those who buy it now will support us to finish the game. 

If you’ve already paid for any The Remainder content on itch, thank you so much. Anyone who’s paid at least $20 for the itch version will get a free update to the full game when it comes out as well as the Fanpack which includes a bunch of bonus material like OST and Art+Lore book.

When the full game is released, the fanpack will be priced separately, on top of the $20. This is our way of thanking our early supporters.

Steam 

Act 2 will release some time around October on Steam, it will get achievements and any updates, fixes and refinements we add from now until then.

Act 1 will remain free.

We’ve just released the demo! (ver 0.02).

This being our first game, and the beginning of releasing playable content into the wild, we wanted to keep it somewhat small and cozy, without as much marketing fuss as we could have done.

If you’re reading this, you’ll be among a small handful of people who’re playing the game in its first incarnation. We think it’s a special thing because we truly believe The Remainder is something at least a bit interesting and will only get better with time If you play it at all, that would already be cool, but if you decide to tell us what you think about it, and potentially help us improve the game, that’d be cooler still, and you’ll have our gratitude. 

Also, do have fun! We hope you’re here because you’re genuinely intrigued by what you see and that you get some enjoyment out of the story.

On a related note, we set up a discord server for the project as a central hub to interact with you.

Who will you encounter?

Ilar Fehlos

Every Magus works with a partner, and yours is Ilar, a Third Degree Magus who appears to be in their early 30s. 

Ilar is the one who wakes you up at the beginning of the story and tries to guide you through escaping the dangers facing you. They can be stern, and at times aloof as they instruct, encourage, chide or even threaten you into doing what’s necessary. The past that you and Ilar share is revealed as you discover clues about what happened, and the future that you might share is shaped as you make your escape.

Origin of Ilar

The germ of the idea for Ilar was somewhat simpler than that of the premise, it was—Ghibli’s Howl, but older and darker.

If you’ve played the game, it’s probably not a spoiler that Ilar seems to be holding back with their words and actions. You get the sense that there’re depths to Ilar that can’t be easily seen from the surface. What’s in those depths? How is it affecting Ilar? How is it affecting you? Is it something that needs to be brought to the surface and released, or is it better sunken and forgotten?

Your actions decide whether you become friends, enemies, or romantic partners with Ilar, or one of the other characters. 

Currently, there is only one visual design for Ilar - the non-binary design. We plan to introduce slightly more masculine and feminine variations for Ilar in the next stages of development.

Here is a mockup of how the game screen should look like. UI should be minimal, clicking the icon under text opens the menu and that’s about it.

At the moment pretty much everything is subject to change so any feedback is very welcome!

I got this journal entry quite late. It was huge shift in overall mood of the game for me... it was one of the rare moments we get to know something more about them. I just wish we could read more about Ilar's exploits as curious travelling mage :')

Eye of the Abyss

While playing Chronicles of Tal'dun I ended up going down strange paths and experiencing even stranger fates... and with them came pieces of breathtaking story and lore. And I love every one of them (in a way) no matter how sad, painful or hopeless they were.
