Try it. Seriously. The first episode, and to a degree the first season, has some issues with explicitness (both in sex and violence) of the type you mention, but that doesn't last. In fact the show has become incredibly good about using both sex and iolence for very specific narrative puposes and it is just so good!

Yes and Yes ! Honestly i think season 1 is my least favorite season of the show (it's still a pretty good season). But the 3 others are just amazing. And the characters !! They are the essence of the show. They are all grey, and change so much thought out the seasons ! You should really give this show a chance.

If this makes any sense I prefer shows like Westworld and Legion etc where explicitness is less or is used for a region but not shows like Game of Thrones or Outlander (also on STARZ hence my hesitation with Black Sails) where I feel like it’s just there for the sake of it but I love Toby and Rupert and Tom and Jessica and I’m need of a good gritty period action show with Musketeers and all those like it no longer around

2. Favorite genre of fic?

Romantic angst with a happy ending. They need to earn a happy ending that isn’t a deus ex machina, and if my chest hurts because I want them to be together, even better.

4. Favorite pairing?

Stop making me choooose. A favorite type of pairing seems to have an age difference, where the two treat each other like equals. And I like stoic guys falling and being all closet romantics? Ugh.

6. Favorite fic (or one of them)?

Gosh, if I have a favorite, it’s most likely bookmarked on my AO3. If not, then maybe one of the Man from UNCLE fics by KellieM? Or possibly Blue Sky by waffleguppies?

8. Do you read WIPs?

Yes, and I cry when I realize they haven’t been updated in two years. Some of my favorite fics are WIPs.

10. Favorite trope/element/scenario in fic?

Oh, geez. Um. I like arranged marriages where the couple falls for each other? Or, um, gosh, I dunno. *scratches head* Secrets? Ugh. *headdesk*

12. What turns you away the most from a fic?

I totally answered this one already, but bad spelling and grammar tends to make me wince and hit the Back button (or close the tab.) Bad execution of an excellent idea makes me sad.

Angst:

14. What tropes/elements/scenarios get you the worst?

Armand confessing that they love the Brandon to Charlie, and Brandon overheard it? Or, um, gosh, I’m trying to think of really good examples of “ow, my chest really hurts a lot.” Maybe Armand loves Brandon, but he feels like there’s no chance, but he just keeps soldiering on anyway, and he’ll deal with it later? Ugh, I’m so bad at this.

I know there’s a Star Trek 2009 vampire fic series that I started writing where the two vampires were in love with different mortal guys, and they were angsting about whether or not their lovers might be in it for the vampiric bite orgasms. Like, they didn’t want their lovers to get turned, or to get hurt because of them.

16. How do you feel about character death in fic?

Don’t do it for a cheap thrill. I’m going to avoid reading death fic in general, unless the one who dies is A) comes back from the dead in a way that makes sense in the canon universe, or B) is a bad guy who really deserves to die.

18. Favorite angst fic?

Again, I have no idea, because it’s hard to remember stuff. Check my AO3 bookmarks?

20. Do you like PWPs?

It’s actually been a while since I read one? I think it’s because I like seeing the couple get to the point where they can be in a relationship before they have sex, because that makes the sex better. I’ve read them before, and if it’s part of a universe where I’ve seen them get together, then yay.

22. Biggest turn-ons in fic?

IC characterization that makes me see a character in a new light. Also, smut. I like smut. ^^;

24. Do you have any dirty kinks that you’re ashamed of?

Ehhh. I mean, I wrote a breathplay masturbation fic once, and I’ve read BDSM fics, but I can’t really say that I’ve got a kink that I’m ashamed of?

26. Any kinks that you don’t want to try in real life (but are still hot in a fanfic)?

Not really? I tend to get turned on by stuff that would turn me on IRL, so if it’s not something I’m into, then it wouldn’t really cross over that well?

28. How do you feel about masturbation in fic?

I think it’s hard to get right? I mean, I’ve written a fic or two where it’s just one character masturbating, but even then, I’m more in favor of a partner being involved, whether the partner is watching, or actively participating. For a scene in a fic, it’s easier to do because it can be a lot shorter, but as a standalone fic, it can be a bit more unwieldy because how many times can you have a character moan or groan or squeak or whatever in reaction? That part can get a little repetitive after a while.

30. Favorite porn fic?

Again, it’s hard to really say? I’ve read some porn fic that was just porn, and there’s a bit of a plot involved to make it make sense. And some porn is in fic that has a plot, and woo the smut is steamy. Wish I had a rec for you, but again, I’d say to look at my AO3 bookmarks and look for the NC-17 fics.

AU:

32. Favorite AU tropes?

Shapeshifters and vampires, if they aren’t already in-universe. And the shapeshifters have a societal hierarchy and structure.

34. Do you like UAs (universe-alterations, when the main universe and characters are the same but one plot point/decision/outcome is altered)?

GIMME. A number of the AUs that I’ve pondered or written have been UAs, so I’m all for the road less traveled. As long as there’s no death, and there’s smut. I like good, IC smut.

36. Do you like crossovers? If so, favorite crossover?

I can go for a crossover if it makes sense, given the fandoms being jammed together? Quantum Leap can be a little black dress for crossovers if the action takes place on Earth during a certain time period. Doctor Who can work for just about anything. I’m trying to think of crossovers, but again, AO3 bookmarks. If I liked anything there, it’s bookmarked.

38. How do you feel about genderbending? De-aging? Animalizing?

Genderbending works for me as long as you make an attempt to change the name. If Marty McFly’s going to be a girl, please try to change the name to something that would make sense for the time and place she was born.

De-aging is very hard to get right because it’s hard to write kids that aren’t annoying as fuck. Either the kid is lisping when they have no history of lisping, or they’re annoying little shitheads. I’m more curious to see what the character was like as a teenager than as a little kid, honestly.

If you mean, they were always a cat, then I could see that? I remember reading a Boffins fic (Hobbit) where Thorin and Dwalin were cats, and it was cute. If you mean, this character can shapeshift into an animal, sign me up. Those kinds of AUs fascinate me. If I ever get around to it, I’ll have to write an original fic about the cop who’s in the mounted unit as one of the horses.

Fluff:

40. Do you like fluff?

Yeah, I can go for fluff. Gotta be in the mood for it, though.

42. Least favorite fluffy tropes?

Cutesy pet names that the character would never say in canon in a million years. Fluffiness at the expense of characterization in general. (Trust me, it’s possible to do fluff with Gaara of the Desert from Naruto. It just takes a looooot of work to make me believe it.)

44. How fluffy is too fluffy?

If I can feel my teeth rotting in my head, I gotta tap out.
