“Psst… it’s okay, he’s gone now.” Steven crouched down and whispered to his pet cat hiding in his backpack. The former stray climbed out and landed in the floor of the empty classroom.
Steven didn’t like detention, but he couldn’t seem to stop getting in trouble. Only because he couldn’t stop not paying attention in class.
His pet followed him out into the hall. He checked every corner to make sure the teachers really were all in the lounge with their coffee before he made it outside.
“Ahh… freedom!” Steven looked up at the sky. The sun was just starting to set. How long had he been in detention!? His hand still hurt from writing lines.
“Found you, Ruby!” His walking finally stopped when he spotted the girl at their favorite café. And by café, he meant bench and table by a vending machine on the corner. “I saved this for you, since you were…sick.”
He took the homework packet from his backpack, identical the one he’d started on in detention. He handed it to her.
“I can help you with it if you need?” Steven was willing to do that, even if right now he never wanted to see school work again in his life.
