CAROLINA HERRERA

There is an exceptional richness to a designer brand helmed by a founder that waves the start flag and marks the finish line with an inimitable tenure of polish and poise. As the fashion circuit speeds up, things get wildly interactive, and luxury consumers turn the corner on glamour and grace, with a 37-year legacy at play, the House of Herrera is changing lanes. 

This Fall 2018 show will be Carolina Herrera’s last curtain call for the house, leaving her position as creative director for her eponymous label founded in 1980, in favour of an ambassadorial role within the company. She will be passing her wand to Wes Gordon, who has already started designing his magic alongside his boss for the last few seasons, including the Fall finale. And needless to say, he will be filling big shoes.

The show began like the House of Herrera should, a true devotional to the mint white shirt and black piece ensemble that is the code-in-chief, worn and reputed by many, cemented by the designer herself. This was spiced up with a nod to the new order - colour-blocked statements of elegance in the form of a long-sleeved dress, its bottom bursting with a mass of fuchsia ostrich feathers and silver fringe, or coats that were exuberantly adorned with the same. And then there was the empire gown of dreams, flowing with a surge of tulle in a band of rainbow hues that is nothing less than red carpet ready.

A changing of the guard it may be, but not in a melancholy sense. From the spectrum of classic, bold, and new looks infusing the runway,  there is a real air of prêt à changer taking shape. In the house Herrera has lovingly presided over, Gordon will not be changing the code, but reinvigorating its core, while saluting to Mrs. Herrera’s legacy with each and every piece.
